Unofficial A Class names

Hi everyone,  I'm newly signed up to the forum, though I've been watching from afar for a while!

In anticipation of IRM's amazing A Class project it got me thinking on the subject of names. Back in the early 90s I was lucky enough to blag a cab ride on 013 with a coal and oil train from Tuam to Claremorris, and remember the name 'Vera Lynn' painted in the cab above the windows. A fellow enthusiast once told me that many, if not all, of the class were named like this, and I wonder does anyone else know the names of other locos, particularly those on the IRM production line (I've ordered 056!), or any info on who named them etc?

Cheers!

OO7 or James Bond christened by passengers on an IRRS special.

In the late 1970s a returning Dublin-Youghal  IRRS special was blocked at Thurles by an up passenger that failed at Templemore.

007 the Thurles pilot loco ran wrong road to Templemore to haul the failed train to Heuston.

Many thanks! Interesting that some of the names changed over the years.

Names for the other classes would also be of interest!

Wonderful - thanks again. It looks like a couple of the 001 names were transferred to 141s later on.

So once I've renumbered my locos to my preferred examples (mainly ones I travelled behind back in the 1980s) I should have:

  • 007 'Paula' or 'James Bond'
  • 055 'Sarah' or 'Sulky Susan'
  • 156 'Principled Priscilla'
  • 192 'Venereal Vera'

155 and 158 always seemed to turn up on my travels as well, maybe I need a 'Negligent Nellie' or 'Hilarious Hilary' in due course.

Edit: having just checked my photos, 172 was the one I had a cab ride in, in later years, so 'Stinking Stasia' is another option...

This is fascinating and kudos to @seagoebox for recording it. Mac’s influence clearly rubbed off! Be interesting to know what names applied in steam days. 111 was always known as ‘The Sergeant’, for instance. Some ‘class’ names were applied. Thus PPs - and presumably the similarly equipped Ps - were known as ‘the wee bouncers’ because they had coil and not leaf springs. SG3s were, famously ‘Big Ds’. I have heard V class referred to as ‘Pounders’ but this may be an early usage as the name doesn’t seem to have percolated through to the late 50s.
