murphaph Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 Morning all, Would the Tara mines wagons ever have gone near the above when in service? Cheers, Phil
Rob Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 They would be seen there when they travel to the wagon works in Limerick for overhaul, upkeep etc
murphaph Posted July 19, 2020 Author Posted July 19, 2020 Cheers Rob, yeah I've seen pics of them outside the works. Is that the only reason for them to have been around that area? How would they have made their way down and up? Individually or in a rake? Tagged onto the back of something else?

Yes, it would be the only reason. There’s a weekly wagon transfer between Dublin and limerick which would take any wagons due works attention to Limerick wagon works, so mixed with flats etc. 1
gm171 kk Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 Shale wagons are similar but they're airbraked. They'd have been in operation between Kilmastulla and Limerick Cement Works. 1
DiveController Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 (edited) Shale wagons would have used the Ballybrophy to Limerick line much more and were stored in Limerick after 2009 when the mine traffic ceased Edited July 19, 2020 by DiveController 2
hurricanemk1c Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 (edited) There's a weekly "as required" wagon transfer from Limerick to Inchicore and back (and Limerick-Waterford and back), can be formed of anything and everything The one on the 16th July had 074 hauling Tara Mines wagon 31015, LP flats 30174 and 30141, and LX flat 30253 back from Inchicore Edited July 19, 2020 by hurricanemk1c 3 1
murphaph Posted July 19, 2020 Author Posted July 19, 2020 (edited) Thx a lot for the valuable information so far guys. What would be required to mod the IRM Taras into shale wagons or is that a non-starter (overall length?) Edited July 19, 2020 by murphaph Forgot to say thanks
DiveController Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 (edited) Actually, some of the shales were converted to Taras, two as clarified by Fran below To become shales they'd have to lose the roof and you'd have to add some ribbing along the side (You may not have detailing in the inside) Both 32' long, similar bogies Edited July 19, 2020 by DiveController corrected info 1

To become shales they'd have to lose the roof and the ribbing is a little different. (You may not have detailing in the inside) Two shale wagons were converted to Taras and still in use. The end profiles of the bodies are a little different too, as are the bogies, lack of end ladders, but not a million miles off. 2
DiveController Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 1st & 4th wagons are converted shales as you can see from the original horizontal ribbing 3
DiveController Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 Beauparc, 2018 Tara Ore Rake with the 2 converts 3
spudfan Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 (edited) There are some good photos and descriptions of both the shale wagon and the Tara mines wagons in the very informative "Locomotives and Rolling Stock of Irish Rail and Northern Ireland Railways" Edited August 2, 2020 by spudfan 1 1
