One of the big gaps in the 7mm market is the humble brake van. Alphagraphix do a SLNCR one but there’s nothing from the main lines. So when I needed a CIE brake van I had to make one from drawings. So here’s a glimpse before she goes into primer...it’s an MGWR prototype. Plasticard body and chassis. Handrails 0.7mm brass wire. Slaters wheels and brake blocks. Invertrain axleboxes - thankfully the steps hide the Caledonian Railway markings! GWR buffers from Northants Model Supplies. Worst bit was fabricating the steps and brackets from bits of brass. A painful few hours of soldering....

Looks lovely! Just right against that U tender in the pic....

Thanks for the tip ! Got my copy and very good it is too.....

Looks amazing - nice to see a Bandon tank. And as for the snack bar - I’ll have a glass of Cidona please !

Yes, that’s my suggestion too. Shim under the copper strip . Might be hard to create a solder bump of consistent height
-
Thanks! V nice bit of work

Thought it might have a UM pedigree! Looks great - any chance of a closeup please?

Looks great, Mike. Is that a blue 4-4-0 I see lurking in some of the shots?

Carrickfergus cabin is still extant and easily accessible as is Portrush. It was not uncommon for window frames in cabins to be a standard size which may give you a scalar to work off

Love this idea - Dromahair was my family’s local station. Lots of resources out there now thanks to Alphagraphix. Scaled down on a photocopier, Roger’s kits will be an ideal source of drawings for you.

Thought I’d better do an update. Baseboards finally painted. And I’ve built a tracklaying jig - almost ready for work. Not exactly Bretland’s system but hey?! First mock-up looks ok I think....

Maybe it was just the Larne line but I also remember these with arched corrugated roofs? Certainly passed one every day between Greenisland and Jordanstown adjacent to the Up line. Roy Carlisle and Ian Sinclair’s books (which I don’t have access to right now or I’d look!) may help with pics.

Downshire halt!! Love it - although as a teenager I wasn’t quite so enthusiastic about heading off to school every day from here...in picture 2 you can just make out the distant signal for Carrickfergus - wonderful NCC somersault. Thanks for sharing...

Looking forward to seeing more on this Ken. I do have a vested interest with a 7mm one in the build pile!

Thanks David - you and John were most gracious hosts and tutors. Most absorbing to lose myself in Tyrone for a few hours. As for the accent - you’re welcome. As a native of Belfast I’ve probably missed certain local nuances but hopefully what I told you is broadly correct. Some of our place names are rather challenging, I admit. But then try us Celtic types on a sentence like ‘Mrs Featherstonehaugh went with her sister Mrs Cholmondeley to Herstmonceux Castle’ ......

Yes, Roger is basically the Bachmann and Hornby of Irish 7mm. We’re lucky to have him !

Freshly cut...

Doesn’t look quite so pristine now. Had all been going so well too. A coat of varnish over the transfers turned milky white . A few washes with dirty thinners later and hopefully something has been salvaged that I can bear to look at! Well that’s it for now. First scratchbuild done. More or less. Lessons duly learned. Onwards and hopefully upwards...

Thanks Leslie - couldn't resist showing my dad the pics in this thread of that episode. As he recalls it took Frank Dunlop’s authorisation to allow 4 to run bunker first. He says you got into Belfast at 3am!
