Fabulous system: with built in point motors and electrical connections. Designed for Japanese homes where layouts are often temporary affairs on the floor. Can be painted and disguised with scenic stuff to look better on a permanent layout. Although if using a ready made layout like that you may be tied in to a particular brand of track favoured by the designer. Here’s pics of my Kato stuff anyway….all sold to feed my O gauge obsession! It was great fun setting up a layout for a night and watching 8 coach trains speed through the station, doing some shunting when you felt like it. Locos and stock are also cheaper than German equivalents, whilst being mechanically on a par if not even superior at times.

David Weston, one of Britain’s premier railway artists back in the day, was finishing off a portrait of an A4 when a lady visited his studio. ‘Oh, I see you’re painting diesels now’, she said! I’ve a fair idea who that GN modeller was, having met him. An extremely gentle and gracious man, he nonetheless had strong convictions! He was a leader in his local church and always arranged GN motive power to haul their Sunday School excursion to Portrush…..

How fabulous! We used to live a few miles away from Cliddesden, the site where this was all filmed. Used to make regular pilgrimages there.

Beautiful just beautiful. The shopping list helps show just what goes into a scratch loco built to this standard. Part of the fun is seeing just how many diverse specialist bits you can use - as well as repurposing household staples. In 7mm, I tend to send Laurie Griffin a photo and drawing to see what matches best from his range of castings. It’s quite possible to have an Irish engine equipped with parts from every one of the big 4 (LMS/GW/SR/LNER). One of my own bizarre quirks is to always include a small piece of Alphagraphix etch somewhere in each model as a tribute to the patron saint of 7mm Irish modellers - Roger Crombleholme!

29 would have been largely redundant by late 50s. No reason why UTA wouldn’t have sold her on to CIE or GNRB. After all, the GN had long experience of how good BP 0-6-4Ts could be, having given heavy overhauls to those from Ireland’s premier railway…. Of course, they could simply have done a swap - in its rush to dieselise the Co Down section, the UTA swapped 29 for the MAK diesel…..

Looks good to me Patrick. Agreed - weathered wood needs shades of grey rather than brown. When you apply that treatment you may find that the brown on the railsides actually looks ok without further intervention. A dusting of talc will also help it all blend in together.

Absolutely gorgeous. It’s not a true scratch build unless some existential crisis hits you near the end. But what a result! Fabulous work.

I am typing this on a northbound Enterprise - have just spent my first day in two decades travelling round Dublin by rail and bus. Much though I loved the dereliction of the push pulls in the pre Dart era, it really is a fabulous system now. Clean and efficient as far as I could see. Broombridge interchange is a wonderful facility- that LUAS/rail interchange is brilliant. I did feel rather aggrieved to see some green and silver snake sporting the legend ‘Sligeach’ crawling through. Everybody knows that the Sligo train is hauled by 121s with a buffet car and mail vans !!

It’s O gauge Michael - 32mm gauge so not true Irish 5’3 which is 36.75mm. Does mean it will be able to run on far more layouts ! Great Northern Railway (Ireland) served much of northern and western Ireland.
