Thanks gents, I'll keep you posted as she progresses so. I picked her up on EBay a while ago Jonathan, they were kits made by the McGowan brothers in Monck Place. As Pat says Tyrconnel do a nice one that's reasonable price that would be more detailed than this one. SSM also do a 00 gauge version.

One thing you can do Eamon which would be a cheaper option is replace the Athearn motor with a kato one. Really simple to do, direct fit, and they transform the running qualities. You can buy them direct off the katousa.com website usually and cost about 45 dollars including shipping. I have a number stock piled for my Athearn locos. Just a thought.

Something Irish for a change! An ancient Leinster Models O Gauge MGWR J26 tank kit. My first stab at soldering a kit together. I've had some invaluable tutoring and assistance from the lads in the MRSI. Did the running plate and most of the body so far. The kit itself is a bit basic and rough and plenty of cleaning up/detailing will be needed but I'm enjoying it so far. The body still hasnt been soldered to the plate below as I still have to add the boiler etc, but you get the idea.

Pressure vent (non air con) mark 2s are needed.

Having had a spin on the ETR 500 down to Florence they are seriously impressive trains to travel on. Happily sped along in comfort at 150 mph and were a lot nicer and smoother than our ICRs (which I do rate as a good train).

okay, I would recommend maybe starting with something a little more basic, like SSM brake van to get practicing with soldering. Even before that practice soldering with some scrap pieces of brass, even the frets from the Maedb kit. Also, I would recommend getting this book it's old but very good http://www.amazon.com/Etched-Loco-Construction-Iain-Rice/dp/090686786X I'm using it as I find my feet with building etched kits. I know you're eager to build an 800 kit but I would practice on something a bit more simple first.

Can I ask, have you ever built an etched brass kit before?

I find that there is no substitute for pen and a bit of paper. You might not be happy with something unless you design it yourself.

Athearn don't offer the SW1500s with sound at the moment. EBay would be the best bet for a 2nd hand donor.

Kato and Atlas do the best quality stuff in N gauge American outline. Their stuff is superb and reasonably priced.

It's not as simple as that. I think people mainly buy by things like different liveries etc for variety. I can't see someone buying 60 A Classes somehow if you're drawing down to operational numbers and as you say many times 121s operated in pairs so two numbers in each livery rather than one A in each livery. The only previous version of the 121 was the MIR kit whereas I'd bet a fair few silver fox kits have been sold in recent years, further restricting sales potential. At the end of the day Paddy Murphy will have done his homework and that has led him to announcing his plans to do a 121 and as it stands it's the last model left to do from his last official announcement a number of years ago. If he is to do another newly tooled model it will be the 121.
