  1. Wow! Well done on this, I had a go at n-gauge and modelling Irish subjects but I was getting so frustrated at the fiddlyness (is that a word?!) that I gave up! The detail you have achieved on the rolling stock is fantastic! Did you find it difficult to get a chassis that would fit under the 071's? The layout itself looks great and really captures the feel of Connolly. Lolling forward to see this progressing further!
  2. Leave it as is! The core of the site will always be Irish Railways themed. We're a small community and it's great to see other forums being set up under the overall banner, it adds interest, and it keeps the site alive and fresh. Why can't the name of the site have both meanings? I fall in to both categories- I model Irish railways, and am Irish. I'm really concerned about Anthony's post. My layout lies in about 20 different pieces at the moment, all at various stages of completion. Should I leave the forum because I don't currently have anything of interest to post? If you want this to be an exclusive little club for a handful of select contributors that's an awful shame. I'm in my 30's and hope to be contributing to the banter here for many years to come. When time an money permit I will reveal work and layout, but I'm sure like many others on this site, the craic banter and knowledge that is share on here is the most important reason for logging on after a hard days work.
  3. I'm greatly drawn to the Irish Rail era 80's into the 90's. My Grandparents lived in Eastwall opposite the old signal box on West Road. I loved visiting on a weekday when there used to be so much to see back then! A's struggling up the incline from the North wall yards with a variety of different freights, NIR stock, and the various other passenger trains of the time. I realise now that this greatly influenced my choice of era! I never though I'd see the day that we would have so much choice in terms of rtr and kits relating to the Irish scene.
  4. Thanks for that John. I don't think all 40 flats were converted to Timbers. There are at least 10 x 60' flats in use on PWD duties e.g. Track panels transport. Were any other batches of 60' wagons built?
  5. Anyone know how many 60' Timber wagons are in play? Do rakes of timber wagon cross paths at any stage on the network? I also witnessed 20' timber wagons (loaded) stabled at Grand Canal Dock at weekends for a time in the early 2000's. I assume originating from Sligo. What was the reason for this? Were they running via the Rosslare line for a time? Maybe remodelling of the North Wall yard was going on and no capacity there to run around? Answers on a postcard please!
  6. Snapper, this has been bugging me all day! What is the longest single platform on the network? Is it the centre platform at Adamstown?
  7. More variety in the trailer department- 3 axle cement hoppers, bulk grain tippers, petrol tankers etc., and modern 4-axle cement and tipper bodied trucks (hino's and DAF's) that took over the country's roads during the boom! Large yard fork trucks to go alongside the reach stacker. Early 90's cabs, ERF, Bedfords, DAF 3000's, Volvos.... All of the above please!
  8. Welcome Phil. Here a little more inspiration for you... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/4899-mointeach-na-hinse-lia-1jpg/
  9. Interesting you posted this now, I was crossing Merrion Gates just today around lunch time and saw a 2 car set travelling along the coast towards Blackrock. Was really surprised to see it, and was thinking it might be driver/route training.
  10. Another couple of interesting images can be followed on this boards.ie thread: http://touch.boards.ie/thread/2054924144/4 Something that jumps out is the old tipper truck with flying snail logo. This is a scene that belongs on 'Patricks Layout'!
  11. Here's a few good shots from the period http://europe.nxtbook.com/nxteu/zahra/em_20130607/index.php?device=accessible&pg=25
  12. I see an interesting piece in the May 1973 edition about the (yet to be built) Tara mines site in Navan. Originally the ore was to be shipped from a new rail-connected port facility at Mornington, south of Laytown. Any ideas as to why this never came to pass? Would be a good fictional layout idea!
  13. Can you just remind me, how do I get in contact with Jim to give an order? (PM me the details if you don't wish to publish his details for all to see)
  14. Attended the show today, and couldn't agree more with the sentiments above. A really great show, well laid out and something for everyone. It was great to see lots of families there aswell. The finished O'Connell Street tram layout has really come to life since the first time I saw it, really impressive! Also got to meet And chat with Dave and Eoin (baseboards and Darts) great to see people getting up off their behinds and trying something new. (Glazed Dart model is fantastic! Price is a whole other topic!) Staying on topic, would highly recommend a visit if you have time tomorrow! And don't bring your wallet, because like Warbonnet, I'm sitting here now wondering how I'm gonna feed myself for the next 2 weeks! Lots of bargains to be had!
  15. Hi Kirley. I'm watching the progress of you layout with equal amounts of admiration and envy! As you said at the start of this thread, it's a lifetimes ambition finally being realized! Can you tell me how your shed has worked out while all the modeling has been going on? How is it in the cold weather/warm weather? Anything you would do different?! Also, would you be willing to share a rough track plan of what you have in place? I'm amazed at how much you seem to have fitted in. I'm hoping to get round to kitting out a 16' x 9' room/shed (need to kit out the house first, shed is probably in better shape right now!) and I'm encouraged by how much diorama and scenery you have in that shed! Keep up the good work! Dave182
  16. Wow, well done with that! I am seriously interested! Can't wait to hear final pricing. Eoin, will an unpowered 2 car set be available?
  17. Thanks Rich, Warbonnet. Seems to be good availability of SW 1500's on eBay, so I'll plough on. Would be interested to see how far you got Glenderg, making me slightly nervous now!
  18. Found some drawings in the resources section of this site (which I never realized existed before now!) Link here: http://irishrailwaymodeller.com/content.php/238-121-Class-Locomotive-Drawings
  19. Good Evening all! I'd love to be posting in the 'layout' section of the site, as I've finally move from apartment to a house. But dreams v reality has kicked in, and I ain't gonna be building a layout this side of Christmas! Anyways, I will have plenty of time to be adding to my collection of rolling stock, and a big gap in my collection is a 121. I've been plugging away with scratch built plasticard projects and am growing in confidence with each build. So... Contemplating a 121 class. 1. Anyone can provide me with drawings or measurements? 2. Any suggestions for an appropriate chassis? I've a new workbench area set up for myself and camera is up and running so will post plenty of pics as I go along, and will lean heavily on the collective knowledge of this site. Thanks in advance! Dave 182
  20. Just to avoid any confusion can the above post be edited... The Model Railway Society of Ireland in association with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is proud to be hosting a Model Railway & Hobbies exhibition on August 24th & 25th 2011 at the offices of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council/Comhairle Chontae Dhún Laoghaire Ráth an Dúin, County Hall, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin. ... reads 2011 in the text
  21. Hey guys, Anyone picked up on this? I read an article on the latest MRH email recently about the following company and where they are going with train control. Basically saying 'is this the first serious challenge to DCC?' sound interesting- running your locos using Wi Fi technology! http://www.crest-electronics.net/about.html
  22. Josefstadt you legend! Thanks for that, that's the one alright! Sulzer, thanks for that info too. Anyone know if this layout still exists? It looks like the work of the Wexford Model Railway club, judging by the stock running on it.
  23. I've trawled the internet and still can't find ant reference. If I remember right, we had a 'picture of the month' on one of the former sites, and a picture featured here for a while- it showed 2 141's on a track panel train passing through the station. The station model captured brilliantly the signal box and footbridge, and I think the cement store featured as well.
  24. Hi Patrick, I'll try get my hand on a copy and have a look.
  25. Hi guys. There were some pictures on one of the old sites featuring a layout with Arklow Station modelled. Anyone able to tell me more about it? I think it may have been a club layout, just wondering if it is still in existance? Can't find pictures on the old site, but the layout may not have had 'Arklow' in its name. Any help appreciated!
