Yes, breaking locos can be quite expensive. After my long awaited A class arrived, I hurriedly put it on the layout- too hurriedly as it turned out. The wheels were not quite set properly on the track and when it came to the first set of points it leaped over the side of the board and dropped three feet to the hard hard floor below. Made bits of the front end. Cost me two more weeks and 70euro to have it repaired. My next purchase was backing boards . Maybe I should stick to Lego.........

More mahogany. This time by design. These are the two platforms for the layout. I etched the "paving slabs" on a CNC machine. Super machine- can't imagine the hours it has saved. A few lads from the railway arrived to check on the progress........ I left a rebate on the underside of the sections to take DAS "stones". And @jhb171achill will be pleased to note there are no tapered ends this time.

Fantastic building as usual Kevin. Methinks you are addicted to the buildings side of things at this stage. Keep it up. Who needs trains?

You have been busy Denis. That sloping/sweeping road down from the bridge is class

The tunnel facings are coming along. @David Holman has nothing to worry about so far. There is going to be a LOT of filling, sanding and then rinse and repeat. Ah they will look fine when the twenty foot viewing rule is applied (or should that be two feet?) I ran out of DAS just at the critical moment, so I had to resort to shaping a couple pieces of mahogany. Its why God invented paint. Should be ok hopefully.

Looking forward to the bridges in particular. Cant think why. Looking good

A mine of information- as usual

Best of luck with this Metrovik. One thing that strikes me immediately is the position of the station/platform. Would it not be better to have track in front so as to allow easier access and not to block the view of trains in the yard/station?. Just my opinion...........
-
Couldn't agree more David. I was seriously impressed with your tunnel face in Northport Quay, and I am hoping to fashion mine to look something like yours. Hope you don't mind. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all that carry on. Prob wont come up to the standard of yours but no harm in trying.

I I cant view these videos for some reason. Just sound. I had no problem seeing Patrick's previous footage, but not these latest two. Any help?

Yes, I agree. Working as a joiner over the years, I can't believe the things that are replaced instead of preserved. UK way ahead of us on that score.

Thanks for that Barl. Straight from the horses mouth so to speak

The whole area around the station has been going through a lot of upgrading lately. The forecourt of Colbert has been totally opened up with the front walls and railings being removed. I fear for the future of the Railway Hotel if/when a sale goes through. Hopefully the facade will remain, whatever becomes of it.

Took a break from the bloody ballasting and made a start on the new tunnel facings. Made these two templates and have one filled with Das clay and "stones" lined in. Much more enjoyable, I have to say.

This sounds like its going to be amazing Kevin. And your fantastic buildings will finally be displayed to the best effect. You have your work cut out for you, but with your level of production, it should be a doddle for you. Really looking forward to seeing this coming on. Oh, and in my humble opinion, your second layout on the other side of the room should be Limerick. Would love to see that. But then I might be a little biased. Great childhood memories of going into Colbert Station and walking right up to the rumbling 141s as they idled at the platform. Even putting hands on them. Different times.
-
Yes, quite the difference in heights. When you say inspecting the platform........? For what purpose?
-
THANKS FOR THAT . God, that platform looks rough. The ballast looks like something straight from a layout- brand new
-
Thanks for that men
-
Lads, I am wondering is there a standard height for a platform to be above track. Is it just below carriage doors or is there a measurement set in stone? (pardon the pun). I need to begin my platforms soon and could do with some advice here. Thanks .

Are we still speaking English, or did I wake up in an alternate reality?

Yes , the scenery really needs to be completed here. Every time I see these pics I am seeing a post-apocalyptic landscape, especially the black and white ones. Freaks me out a bit tbh, but then I am easily freaked out. Super layout though

No offence meant.

Yes, apart from all that grief, everything is going swimmingly

That's what I do when I hear funny noises coming from the car. Just turn up the radio

Does it really matter? Looks great, isn't that what this hobby is all about? Amazing photograph
