    If that 3 in 1 is mineral oil as in from a hole in the ground, avoid!!!!!! If its graphite like in powered pencil lead , thats the sort of stuff I have used. I once used 3 in 1 on a loco with rim insulated drivers. The oil got onto the insulation and shorted it out . Could I get more drivers? No!! So there began an operation that involved cutting spokes with a fine coping saw, Araldite Epoxy and repeat. 40 yrs ago and loco is still running! So I never recommend 3 in1 now. Or WD 40!

    Can you not get graphite for lubricating door locks? thats the stuff Kadee sells for lubricating their couplers. A little bottle has lasted me a lifetime. Plastic compatible oils should be ok. Stay well away from any mineral oil however "light" it is.

    Leslie, whats the odds for a bit of RMT, ASLEF interference in your travel plans? from Lincolnshire dirty diesel car is the best way to get there.

    All I will say in response to this thread is when you buy your donor coaches make very sure you get ones of the right length. Two of mine were fine so finished eaons ago. One was a couple of mm shorter which I only discovered after I had done all the prep work and put the adhesive on the sides with all the little clamps to hold stuff in place. AND, and and its a wonder my swearing was not heard across the Irish sea. So beware !!

    Also my problem John! Which one to start next? And how to choose the next one to finish? I have been diverted from the Irish straight and not so narrow by an L&Y Dreadnought which is proving hard to make a silk purse of! Mrs 84C has just shown me Station Road Steam's facebook page if you fancy a bit of steam envy have a peek, there will be no disapointment.

    Really looks the business for a GWR loco with the large chimney Accurascale are to be congratulated on the detail and authenticity. Will the BR style locos be fitted with the narrower chimney which was fitted when they redraughted? Older drivers whom I knew said the Manor was a real dog and hard to get to steam as first built. Could be tricky after rebuilding!!

    But boss, the truck won't earn much money with only eight ton's on. You know the trailer carries 20 ton's and I'm paid by results! For you truckers out there, please load your fertilizer in solid blocks , imagine what will happen in the event of a sudden stop. The pallets will move and try to escape off the trailer, even over the head board. Now who is going to be the first to tie a drivers "dolly" to rope the load on. In 4mm scale?

    I have several of those and have carved off the ventilator then sand smooth, very carefully!, separate the body from the chassis. Respray the chassis with grey automotive undercoat and Bobs your uncle a much better nearly Irish box van. Pop the wheels out before you spray paint at it and put a little piece of masking tope over the wheel bearing hole. Over here in the UK Halfords is favourite for paint.

    Bob, KMCE has put it so well, so dont dump the books! Your problem runs in my family so I count my blessings that at 76 I only have the diabetic rubbish!. You are moving to a lovely area with preserved railways close by so when health permits I'm sure you will get out and enjoy all the Cotswolds have to offer. I do look forward to seeing more posts from you, 7mm good in the garden? maybe a man shed? And best of luck with the move. Kindest regards. Mick

    Thanks for that John, its the shape I was thinking of and dart produce a 10ft WB version which will substitute for the Silverfox bogie if my plan does not work. I would like to beef up the S/F bogie as it has the coupling and bogie centre fixing pin moulded in. But nice to have a plan B. Mick

    Eoin, totally agree with that idea but I am going down the armour plate route as these run on a club layout and the members are not always gentle in the handling department. The plastic frames will become cosmetic. Mick

    I ask because I have been tasked with repairing a bogie off our CIE AEC DMU, it looks a a very flimsy concoction made of different types of plastics which I think rules out glue. And the wheels jump out of the frames at the slightest excuse! I have a plan! which involves making a brass subframe to support the wheels and bolting it to the existing bogie frame. Onward into the unknown! i think the problem has been caused by by bigfingershortsightedismness so a rerailing ramp would be a good plan.

    I know its a cost, as is any security, but why could the models be fitted with small alarm tags? Lights flash, hooters blow, bells ring as a thief tries to leg it! Like the tension lock coupling idea.

    Whestys SSM Bandon tank makes up into a very nice loco, is not a hard kit to build and it would be a shame if his sales dived because a ready to run version is brought out. I wonder how many J15 kits he has sold since 00 works delivered their J15? And I stick my hand up to owning an 00 works one. I still think the D&SER 2-6-0 is the one for a manufacturer to go for as its a visible loco that would be at home on many/all the layouts featured on this group. For me the interest in Irish Railways is building and adapting models to fit the Irish scene; but that's just me sayin!

    Love the weathering on the J15! Rusty chimney and smokebox looks brilliant! I want to give mine the treatment, as also my 121, buuuuuut! So I'm thinking shut the eyes and dive in.

    I have used resin from Alex Tiranti , bought as a kit and found both resin and rubber had/have a very long shelf life. I also found you have to be prepared to throw away unsatisfactory castings or repurpose them as grounded bodies. I also found a mix of thin superglue and talcome powder is good for fixing small holes etc; Thank you Alan for sharing your excellent layout and models. I'd travel a few miles if you exhibited your layout!

    J-Mo heres my 850 starting from a V3 and my Woolwich with a few "tweaks" With 850 you have to be willing to take the saw to the patient! I was quite brutal! and did wonder if it would work out OK!

    Was David the guy who ran DJ Models and had links to Dapol? Rather a shame the loco never happened, maybe one for IRM to run with ? As the loco is/was visible on the preserved railtour scene, would it sell? only market research would establish. I hope it happens, hopefully before I loose the ability to use a controller!
