  2. Would be interested
  3. Hi guys, I am looking for some detailed explanations as to how the signal staffs for single lines were used and for information of the different types used by the early railways and then by CIE. Did the position of the rings play a meaningful part in their use? Would anyone be able to point to some useful resources? With thanks
  4. Second one is almost definitely Rosbercon (New Ross) facing Waterford direction. Station building on left was for passengers with a small shelter on the far platform, building on right was the goods shed. Bridge is now located in Rosslare Strand. In the photo below the small shelter has been removed.

  8. Were there any attempts to use oil / diesel to fire steam engines at any stage? Would oil be much less efficient than coal to operate an engine?
  9. Hi guys, Can anyone identify the narrow gauge locomotives used on the Baldonnell construction railway? Photos from 1918 I believe. I have read they were from different manufacturers and eventually went to India. The two narrow gauge trains would convey up to 200 workmen each on up to 25 open wagons with back-to-back seats. Waiting lorries would convey anyone who could not be accommodated on the trains. Supplies for the canteens were also carried. The number of troops stationed at Baldonnell occasionally reached the 1700 mark and at times included American and Canadian soldiers.

  22. "Needless to say - the Health and Safety commissars have had their say ( how in gods name did countless generations of Borris Youth play on the viaduct for over 150 years and nobody fell off) and the new structures have provoked mixed comment to put it politely." There is an interesting clip on youtube when 'Off the Beaten Track' was filmed. No health and safety concerns then or worries about setting a bad example for the wild youth of the day lol
  23. Walked it the other week. Very Impressive. What happened to the end towards the town, was it originally as large earth bank?
