Here's a few photos of the 4' 8½" gauge line used by Irish Steel on Haulbowline. They were taken during an IRRS visit, but I can't remember the date. First there are two views of one of the three Unilok road/rail shunting locomotives used on the system - the number would seem to be IA01 (or 1A01): The next photo is of one of the system's bogie flatcars. These were previously used on a variety of US railroads: Next is a photo of the end of the line on the site's pier, looking towards Great Island. Cobh station is just out of view to the right: Finally a photo of the ferry 'Thomas Óg' which provided the service from Cobh to the island:

I am again unable to access the new site. The address 'www.themodelshop.ie' takes me to the 2010 site when using either Explorer or Google Chrome. -
Signal Cabin / Signal Box Photos

There is a similar setup with raised walkways in the 'Wicklow Sidings' in Bray. The walkways, made of steel, were put in to provide a safe walking route for drivers changing ends in the sidings (sorry no photo). There were also similar wooden walkways in the bay platform area in Dún Laoghaire before the area was redeveloped for the DART. These were used for cleaning coaching stock. The attached photo shows the area as DART works in the station waere just starting. The line serving the platform has been lifted and some of the coping stones have been removed. The light coloured area on the wall opposite the signal cabin was where the siding whent across Harbour Road and on to St Michael's Wharf. Personally, I'd keep the walkway on the layout.

I came across an old copy of the CIÉ staff newspaper, Nuacht, dated January 1976. It had a feature on new trucks beingput into service at that time which might be of interest to those modelling that era. I had to scan it in three sections, due to the size of the original, so there is some overlap between the images:

I've been told that the colour was black.

Can you clarify what you mean please?

Me neither. Still showing '©2010 The ModelShop.ie' when I log in.

Totally agree. Air fares pre-Ryanair were mad and had all sorts of stupid conditions attached to them. I know that Ryanair itself has various conditions and penalties, but play by their rules (as you have to with all airline companies) and you can fly from A to B at a reasonable cost. In relation to WestJet, between 15 June and 5 October next year it will be serving the Dublin - St John's (Newfoundland) - Toronto route. Great video by the way.

Fantastic set of photos from around the country, bringing back memories of an era now sadly gone. Great find and thanks for posting the link Dave.

IÉ is to operate late night DART services on five nights in the run up to Christmas - Friday 13th, Saturday 14th, Thursday 19th, Friday 20th and Saturday 21st December. Services will operate at 00:30 Pearse-Howth, 00:35 Pearse-Malahide and 00:30 Connolly-Bray, and will serve all stations on the three routes. Fares will be charged at normal DART rates and holders of weekly, monthly and annual season tickets will be able to use the service at no extra charge. All services will have security personnel on board. IÉ's website states that the 'decision to run the late night DARTs was made following an online survey of customers which indicated strong support for the extra service'. If there is strong demand, the IÉ would be prepared to 'look at the possibility of expanding the service in future years, both in terms of frequency, and in terms of more destinations, such as Greystones on the DART and other Commuter routes'.

Just a memory - Phibsboro Modellers Shop
josefstadt replied to Sulzer201's question in Questions & Answers
That brings back memories. I got my first book on Irish railways, 'Irish Railway Album' by CP Boocock, there after much saving of the pennies. It cost the princly sum of 30 shillings (about €1.90 in today's money) which doesnt seem like a lot now, but which was a fortune to a schoolboy back in 1968/69! The storeroom at the rear of the shop was an Aladin's cave of items that weren't on the shelves, a lot of which were no longer in the catalogues. As Mayner said, the assistant Eddie Elliott was extremely tolerant and helpful and he would often allow one to rumage through the stock in the storeroom to see if there was anything of interest, though these were usually out of reach of my funds. -

This madcap scheme grew even bigger and ultimately proposed a narrow gauge line from Greenore in Co Louth to Clifden in Co Galway - a distance of approximately 234 miles. This would, according to Fayle's 'Narrow Gauge Railways of Ireland', have made it the longest mainline in the country. Known as the Ulster & Connaught Light Railway, the line would have run via Newry, Bessbrook, Keady, Tynan, Maguiresbridge, Bawnboy Road, Dromod, Rooskey, Roscommon, Tuam, Shrule and Cong. Branches from Shrule would have run to Ballinrobe and Galway. Fayle estimated the end to end journey time being in the region of 10 hours!

Beware when taking photos on Alexandra Road (or anywhere on Dublin Port Company land) as you will probably get hassle from the port police. All activities in the port area, i.e. everywhere to the east of East Wall Rd, are covered by port security legislation, which means that security is much tighter there than elsewhere. You could try applying for a photographic permit from the DPC - their head office is in the Port Centre, the square multi-storey building on the right-hand side at the start of Alexandra Rd. Phone 01-8876000 ; email: info@dublinport.ie ; Fax 01 8557400.

Notorious bandit Brown Paper Pete came riding into town on his brown paper horse with his brown paper hat, his brown paper boots and in his hand was his brown paper gun ... they hanged him for rustling.

I'd be more concerned with what looks like the tail of a sea monster in the second photo!!

Came across this interesting video about to London Underground's plans for the future: Food for thought for our transport providers and the Government / local authorities.
