Enjoy the journey and history of this line from the update today on the disused stations website. As a co-author if this work, all feedback is most welcome and a special thanks to Ernie for all his help.
Have the same problem as an Historian trying to identify and date photos correctly. Acquired a CDR photo last week labelled Ballyshannon but actually an unusual angle of Stranorlar
That tends to happen a lot when you see similar photos on the same date/place by some photographers who have travelled together. For example for an August 1959 weekend on the CDR 3 of the 4 photographers who travelled together have since published their own books/articles of the same weekend.
Why does Translink not have an Heritage Officer in NI to protect important railway buildings from demolition. Carrichue closed 1954 and demolished 2 months ago after somebody enquired about buying the former station building for a house despite its listed status!
John even old tickets can be useful. We keep the scarce ones but we have been selling 1 old ticket mounted in a small box for example to help raise funds for Drumboe
So if you wish just post them to myself?
Sorry missed that and now you have interested when you mention more Swilly photos! My 2nd railway in County Donegal. The Donegal Railway Heritage Centre is open again. We were offering a virtual Santa experience for the kids which you can access no matter where you live! Funds raised will go towards the Drumboe restoration work. Check it out!
January issue out now has an article on Last Days of steam in NI. This was also theme of the excellent film show last night by Leslie of this parish for the IRRS London branch. Was just brilliant with a few teasing glimpses of the CDR. Thanks Leslie
Thanks the CDR had a small number of former coaches converted into turf Van's. This was former passenger brake 26 converted in 1939. At a time of fuel shortages more coaches had been converted and a special turf siding installed at Strabane. Most of the turf came from the Glenties branch.
John you mention the legendary Railcar A that was well ahead of it's time. Doing the Disused Stations article for Foyle Road to Strabane has made me realise the historic importance of Railcar A. This article is alomost ready and thanks to Ernie for supplying some great photos. My favourites are the Swilly and the County Donegal of course.
After his grand tour reached Cork with some great photos our mystery man has now reached Portadown. Enjoy these photos and thanks again Ernie on behalf of IRM members.
Exactly what worried me as well. Some little errors here and there. Good to hear those Negsxare in good hands especially as they feature my 2 favourite railways.
What can you say? Mine arrived today and this gets a 5 Star rating for all aspects. Superb photos including many pre WW2 and as usual superb reproduction of vintage photos by Lightmoor Press. Essential for all lovers of Irish Railways not just fans of the Irish Narrow Gauge. Thanks Leslie and 5 out 5 for quality of packaging as well. Buy a copy and enjoy what will be a classic book!
