  1. Graham Farish do both a Fairburn tank and a BR Standard 2-6-4T that is close to a Jeep. They also do LNER Teak coaches as well. Check their website?
  2. There were no Orange parades from 1940 to 1943. There were some in 1944 see Barton Belfast Blitz book. So that photo could be July 13 indeed. By summer 1944 the main action was in France post D Day! In the wrong road because coaches are being pushed into long siding other side of bridge once loco runs round?
  3. Back to Scarva there were no Orange parades 1940 to 1943 but some in 1944. So is this a special from Portadown in old DNGR stock and is the engine running round to shunt special into the siding beyond the bridge till after all activities are over? Finally on the bridge head left and you are in the Scarva village itself. By July 1944 effects of WW2 were starting to recede in NI.
  4. If photo is 1944 unlikely to be an orange parade at the height of WW2. Could be a troop special during build up to D Day?
  5. Most likely to be 83 and 87 withdrawn by the UTA in March 1960.
  6. Thanks that's what happens when you go on your memory first! Checked Bunch this morning hard to believe they could run a special 6 months after closure! The double heading could have been a one off as well?
  7. Most Donegal coaches were 31 foot long or later ones were 36 foot long with the exception of the ex LMS coaches. In Michael Bunch part 1 he explains that the 14 coach train was split on arrival. With 11 CDR coaches in both platforms. Therefore say 6 coaches in one you have a length of about 210 feet or 70 yards. The Bunch book is excellent and you can buy both volumes from the CDRRL in Donegal Town. Finally lots of photos of Victoria Road in Railway Archive Volume 2.
  8. Photo is of 712 in the Hilden accident of March 25 1983. Both it and 88 leading the 2nd train were withdrawn due to accident damage. The other accident was in Lisburn on December 20 1978 and the A class hit 742 which was repaired afterwards
  9. Now agree with Patrick and it would tie in well with a visit to Draperstown by senior on the same day. This branch closed to passengers as early as 1930 and was goods only like the Dungiven branch until 1950.
  10. Not Desertmartin for the railcar photo. May not be even on the DC itself?
  11. Looks like NNC Railcar 3 which was virtually identical to Railcar 4. Shunter is NCC 22 which was originally LMS 7057. One of only 3 NCC locos to run on the narrow gauge in Britian as well as Ireland. Will.come back to a location later but it is not the Larne line.
  12. Agree with Patrick that 2 is Dungiven. Picture 1 might be Draperstown?

Yes indeed it that was obvious that I missed it first time. A lot of AEC and some other coaches and railcars ended up in the goods yards of Antrim and Ballymena.
  14. First photo is Strabane note GNR line to the right. All others are Stranrolar and second photo could have been taken from the footbridge?

If 111 was withdrawn in 1969 would confirm Grovesnor Road where it appears to have become a Xmas tree! Photos of 111 in this livery in Young page 95 in 1966. Same for 117 in Allen page 36 in 1968 and 115 in Flanagan page 100 as late as 1969.
  16. The middle road at the LMS NCC Waterside station was often used to store spare carriages and it was not a loco release. In the days of steam there was a lot of goods traffic to and from Derry. So a spare engine would usually take the coaches out and release the train loco for servicing at the Waterside shed and spare locks push carriages back into the station. In the early days like Sligo you had an arrivals and departure platform.

My notes say 111 was withdrawn in 1969 and was the only AEC scrapped in this short lived livery variation.
  18. That is from the Casserley collection. As you can see the signal box is closer to Strabane than it appears to be in the photo by senior in 1947. In that photo it appears to beside the broad gauge transhipment siding built during WW2?

    NIR 621

Possibly but not scrapped until 1973 still in blue and cream in Antrim yard.

Would appear to be AEC 111 in UTA regional livery was ex GNR 603. The location is what is puzzling me at the minute. Any other ideas anyone?

The photo in the NIR book on page 38 (with the incorrect caption) is taken from a slightly different angle to the photo on Ebay but obviously taken on the same date. These parcel Van's were usually seen on boat trains to/from Larnr in the good old days!

After posting remembered to check where I have seen that photo before. Found it in 35 years of NIR on 38 with a similar photo of 621. The caption is wrong but correct for 622 which were both converted in 1973 and air fitted to work with the 70 class. In the table in back of 35 years book gives the same information on these conversions as all my other sources!

The details given are correct for the other converted AEC railcar which was renumbered 622 not 612. Thought that was 621 in the photo and ex GNR 618 then 120 originally. Ex GNR 727 railcar trailer originally GNR 127 then 556 survived into NIR passenger service until 1982.

Railcar 1 built 1933 at York Road and not withdrawn until 1968 along with all other earlier NCC/UTA railcard 621 was cut up at Ballymena in 1983 and was often seen on the Larne line. It was converted from AEC railcar 618 about 1974 after withdrawal in 1972.
  25. This survey led to the closure of the Glenties branch which was in poor shape by 1947. Although the CDR operated the line from Victoria Road it was owned by the LMS NCC and then part of the UTA after 1948. Photos taken by Michael Bunch show that this section had the best track of any narrow gauge line in the North West This also explains why senior was at Victoria Road. All services were steam hauled on this section until complete closure in 1955.
