Patrick Davey Posted September 11, 2025 Posted September 11, 2025 Thanks to @Mol_PMB for spotting the latest update to the IRRS Flickr treasure trove - 355 superb photos from the lens of Gerald Beesley, a mix of B&W and colour, centred on Dublin with a nice selection from Belfast too (Great Victoria Street & Queen's Quay included.) Some cracking colour views of A class locos following their 1968-71 engine upgrade: black & tan heaven! This has been said many times but it's worth repeating: the price of the IRRS membership is worth it alone for access to the Flickr archive, over TWENTY EIGHT THOUSAND images from railways throughout the island of Ireland, very few if any have been published, and many many very rare and obscure locations featured. Very highly recommended! Very many thanks to the team at the IRRS for the huge effort involved in digitising and uploading these invaluable photographs. What a resource! 2 2 1

Mol_PMB Posted Tuesday at 10:26 Posted Tuesday at 10:26 There are lots of good photos of passenger trains in the early 1950s (including 800s) Some of the new-build stock has interesting livery features especially. I’m pretty sure they’re not all black on the roof. And there are plenty to add to my Horseboxes thread. 2

Bring transfers, of course, It’s possible that one applied on a not-properly-cleaned surface had worn off. The grey loco seen on the left seems newly painted too. 1
Galteemore Posted Tuesday at 13:09 Posted Tuesday at 13:09 Fabulous views of 800s in action, not to mention 400s and any number of fine 4-4-0s. Really nice capture of Ireland on the eve of dieselisation 1
Patrick Davey Posted Tuesday at 13:28 Author Posted Tuesday at 13:28 Nice update - timely shots of the 800s in action. 1

Galteemore Posted Tuesday at 15:59 Posted Tuesday at 15:59 Be careful. It’s full of enticing things - you’ll never leave ! I still cannot understand why I never went during the three years we lived in Dublin…. 3

I still cannot understand why I never went during the three years we lived in Dublin…. It absolutely is. Membership cannot be highly enough recommended. A generation who knew the railways in their later heyday is now dying out, and much historical information will be lost without wider participation. We can always look at pictures and make models, but it's vitally important we know what we are actually looking at. I strongly recommend joining - I've been a member for over 50 years and every Journal is still eagerly awaited, a are visits (all too imnfrequen) into the archives. 3

I have learnt all sorts of interesting things, some that I had gone looking for, and others that I stumbled across. i thonl I need another visit or three! Anyway, new carriage roofs were indeed green in the early 1950s! And for those interested in wagons there are a LOT of GSWR, GSR and CIE diagrams there. Not sorted, catalogued or anything, but there. 2
