Mayner Posted February 28 Posted February 28 I have designed a 3D model roof to suit the Worsley Works Laminate Coaches. An Irish supplier has produced a FDM sample print of the model which successfully captured the distinctive ribbed roof of these coaches. The purpose of this post is to gauge the potential level of demand/interest in 3D roofs and detail accessories for the Worsley Works Laminates (and other Irish width coaches). I would expect that the supplier would supply directly to customers in Ireland, EU and UK, JMD not involved commercially. Please PM or reply directly to this post with potential quantities of coaches/roofs. While I prefer resin printing in order to achieve an acceptable standard of surface finish and fine detail, FDM has its advantages in printing parts like coach roofs both in terms of speed and largely eliminating the risk of warping/distortion present with resin printing. https://3dprintingservices.co.nz/fdm-vs-resin-3d-printers/?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23134282514&gbraid=0AAAAApVdlQlDT00Rlf-e8eM9jxXPivV7Q&gclid=Cj0KCQiAwYrNBhDcARIsAGo3u33tOoKRcDnvUXbE_Dcuar1znBG4Ab2ceT0w0n3VCBF6oVQO6t2-ARcaAlzoEALw_wcB 4
GSR 800 Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Looks very good indeed John! I'll be taking two as discussed before. 1
Mayner Posted March 2 Author Posted March 2 (edited) The printer Paul Morris of Model Railway Buildings https://modelrailwaybuildings.ie/ has advised that while he is kept busy with the buildings "but doesn't mind running projects off for the lads" If interested please contact Paul directly info@modelrailwaybuildings.ie or 353 87 3878561 I am prepared to produce 3D model (Stl. file) roof for other Worsley Works Irish coaches from scan of 1 side & ends (Jpg.) coaches & driving end railcar Edited March 2 by Mayner 1
popeye Posted March 2 Posted March 2 I need one for a Park Royal and a couple for your Bredin coaches. 1

Mol_PMB Posted March 2 Posted March 2 I’m interested. I think I’d want to see what the surface finish is like, and the smoothness of the curved surface, before committing to more than one. Also I note that the rib arrangement was different on each coach type, so an option without ribs might be useful. This would also make it much easier to sand down any surface imperfections. 1
Mayner Posted March 3 Author Posted March 3 Worslet Works Park Royal roof: I would need a scan of the end of a Worsley Works Park Royal to ensure the profile is correct. JM Design coach side overlays: I have no plans to produce a 3D roof to suit the side overlays. The overlays were designed (shrunk)to fit Airfix/Dapol 60' Stanier coaches and marginally underscale for 4mm, in my opinion the overlays used in combination with a Stanier/LMS 60' body shell is a reasonable compromise particularly with a representation of CIE roof detail. I considered producing a 4mm scale length/height/width version, but there was insufficient interest to proceed. Worsley Works Laminate roof without ribs. Original design before adding the ribs! Plain Laminate roof. Please feel free to forward the stl. to Paul info@modelrailwaybuildings.ie or print the roof. Worsley Wks Laminate Roof plain.stl 3 1
flange lubricator Posted March 3 Posted March 3 That's fantastic John I am currently building a Laminate I have done a roof by using the comet method cutting it down the centre of a comet roof and widening the roof as you did some time ago when building one . This is certainly the better option and a lot easier preference is without ribs . I will contact Paul and he is more than welcome to use my partially built one to size it up.

Probabably best tie up with Harry (GSR800) before contacting Paul. My 3D CAD models of the Laminate roof are based on info supplied by Harry, Paul is to supply a sample roof to Harry and I have offered to ammend the CAD if necessary. A lot simpler hopefully with better results than my cutting and widening of Comet roofs all those years ago! http://www.worsleyworks.co.uk/NG/NG_NIL_Art1.htm Photos of sample, temporary supports still in place. 5 1
Colonel Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Assuming the material is stable, a 3D printed roof looks like a great way towards solving what is always a tricky problem. With all those rivets and straps already in place, a massive time saver too! 1
flange lubricator Posted March 9 Posted March 9 (edited) Here is the Worsley works Laminate I am working on at the moment I used a comet Mk1 aluminium roof which I widened a 3d printed roof would be a easier option Edited March 9 by flange lubricator 8
Mayner Posted March 10 Author Posted March 10 Your Laminate is looking very nice! Mine got bashed around before trying a modified Comet roof, looks like it might be worth buying a couple lof replacements. Co-incidently began work on designing a 3D printed bogie At the test print stage for a rolling chassis before adding final detail. 6
flange lubricator Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Thanks Mayner slowly getting there . I used A Mjt 8’0 bogie frame and I got the bogie sides from Murrayec A printed bogie would be also a great addition I was looking at Dart castings site over the weekend and note they are no longer supplying to the Republic of Ireland or Nothern Ireland due to the new identity of material sources rule for items being supplied into the EU . This is very inconvenient for modelling. I was also wondering if Irm would be selling the 8’0 commonwealth bogies as an accessory when the Park Royal’s arrive . 2

As well as the bogies, the entire underframe from the Park Royals would be very useful, as it was used under many other types of carriage. The distinctive triangulated framing, including and solebars that are not straight but have several kinks in them, is often simplified in the existing models and kits. 1

Irish freight Models did a very good 3D triangulated underframe on the TPO , laminate and Park Royal they were producing. 1
