201s as a common pool

I was thinking earlier about how the 201s are a shared IE/NIR loco pool, but was this always so, for example did 208 and 209 regularly wander when they where blue? If not when did this system start?

I'm pretty sure even the blue 201's traveled most of the network

i always thought that when the nir 201's went for servicing to inchicore, a replacement from IR went north. after servicing she slotted into iIR schedule until a suitable time arose to do the exchange again, which ment she could have gone anywhere on the network...anyone any more thoughts?

Seems sensible enough. Did the 111s go to inchicore for servicing when they were the main locos in the same way the NIR 201s do?

As far as I know the 111s have always been serviced in York Road.

Actually, you've just reminded me of another related question (hopefully not too off-topic). Were the 3x 111 class delivered by GM in the NIR blue? And same question for the 201's.

The 111s were light blue with the red ends. 208 and 209 were delivered in blue and painted enterprise a couple of years later.

111's delivered in the original light blue, 208/9 delivered in blue, all the IÉ ones delivered in the original orange livery (including 206/7)

3 years - 1981 for 111/2, 1984 for 113

Did they just realise at some point two wouldn't do? Seems strange GM would do a one off production aswell

208 worked all over the network in NIR blue livery, it worked to Galway a few times and Tralee, Thursday 17th October 1996 it worked the 11.35 passenger Heuston / Waterford, it seemed to be always 208, 209 seldom strayed off the Northern line, between 12th August and 20th August 1996, 208 worked cement and gypsum trains between Drogheda and North Wall, it worked a Platin / Cabra cement, in September 1996 it was in Tralee.

209 lost its blue livery in March 1997, 208 was repainted a few months later.

Was something to do with NIR taking on 3 Enterprise runs a day and the Hunslets continuing issues. EMD had no problems at all making a single locomotive and id say axles/cabs aside most parts were available off the shelf. Dont forget at the time the 111's were among the most intensively worked locomotives in the British Isles

When the TPWS requirement for Northern Ireland came in the common pool of 201s went out the window. IE fitted TPWS to 206,207,227,228,230,231 and 233 to worth the DD sets from when the requirement was made mandatory or have a second qualified driver in the cab at all times. That's why 29ks can work north when needed.

 

Only difference when delivered was 208 and 209 had NIR radio equipment fitted and this was added to IE 201s as needed later.
