burnthebox Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Hey guys, get down to Lidl this Thursday, http://www.lidl.ie/en/Offers.htm?id=397
Blaine Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Had soldering irons and cutting disks a few weeks back..
irishthump Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Had soldering irons and cutting disks a few weeks back.. Yes but in fairness the soldering irons are muck. They have a really low quality bit that lasts a about a day!
Blaine Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Yes but in fairness the soldering irons are muck. They have a really low quality bit that lasts a about a day! Fine for wiring, not for brass!
Dave Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 The tips burn out very quickly on them. So they are a false economy. I got an Antex and it will outlast the Lidl one many times over.
Warbonnet Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Yeah I'd stick with the Antex or Weller myself.
irishthump Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Fine for wiring, not for brass! No good for anything! The tip was gone after hardwiring a decoder into 1 locomotive.
skinner75 Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 I've used the Lidl soldering iron a good few times on the wiring of my motorbike - always done the job for me. That said, the tip is a bit knackered now. I've been meaning to pickup a variable temp iron. For assembling whitemetal kits, what lower temp range should I be looking for?
Georgeconna Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 see range of solders here: http://www.finescale.org.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=446
Weshty Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Strongly suggest Carrs 140 c solder. Does brass fine. I don't solder whitemetal, just superglue it.
jhb171achill Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Knowing me, I'd probably go down there and come back with a few bananas, a pack of dishcloths, a bag of potatoes and a tin of sardines! Ah! Forgot the solderer........!
