In a file at Kew Public Record Office I discovered a proposal by Churchill to bomb central Dublin from the air using RAF DH9s with Free State markings. The aircraft were bombed up and ready at RAF Sealand on Merseyside. Mercifully the order to take off was never signed. .

There is a strong Irish connection though. The Londonderry(pronounced London-dree) family owned land in Co Down and were politically active. Piccadilly is a street. A Piccadill was a sort of garment, which was originally sold there. The street runs from Hyde Park Corner to Piccadilly Circus.

It’s interesting as it seems to be related to the origins of the traffic. Thus ‘Mart’ and ‘Sales’ are also used, which are fairly self explanatory. The term CPH is ‘County Parish Holding’ - a way of identifying places where livestock are handled. I’m wondering if some taxonomy related to this kind of idea is in play, identifying the source of the traffic.

These are fabulous views Ernie. The coach 10 one offers a really unusual angle on the station building, showing an odd protrusion I haven’t noticed before. Always nice to see the railway staff included.

Absolutely not. They always travelled to the shipping ports - the animals were not cross decked. Possibly Derry was a destination but definitely Belfast several times a week. Most cattle traffic through Belfast actually travelled by SLNC. The irony was that SLNC passenger stock never travelled off network (after a significant incident in Greenore) but its cattle trucks travelled very far.

Irish Railway Record Society offer a set of GN and one SLNC loco drawings. I used them to build a SLNC loco out of brass.
