  1. I did!! And a few others - Sharman, Ahern, Williams, Holt…..
  2. Both are good. If you have to pick one, I’d go for the first one. He basically builds a GER J15 in it and guides you along the way. It’s probably not a million miles off what your J26 would require - a guide to building a simple six coupled loco.
  3. Post your progress here Mark. We have all had to learn this stuff. I’d also recommend Simon Bolton’s books on scratch building - very accessible and user friendly. Eileen’s is great for many things but can also be pricey. Try watch suppliers like Cousins. Metalsmith is a great place to buy your sheet metal from.
  4. Not a bad idea at that, David! Can’t check dimensions right now but an MGW P is close-ish….images from Mike Morant
  5. They’ve already robbed it of its glorious 5’3” axles. What damage could be worse than that ??
  6. EBay can also offer rich pickings through various small outfits offering 3d and resin prints. Smart Models have been a huge help to my latest project.
  7. Lovely little thing - had 3 of them back in the day. But the chassis was very hit and miss. Anyway, she’s lost a few bits already so it’s not like she’s mint….but it’s always hard to carve up something nice!
  8. I stand corrected Leslie - it was indeed Cork!
  9. The lovely -and frustrating - thing about modelling a location is that it gives you a discipline to follow. Throws up all sorts of challenges as you work out how to replicate a particular chimney or lamp bracket…. Just be careful in your choice of prototype or you will end up replicating the short comings of the real thing…Newtownards, Manorhamilton etc etc…..;)
  10. She had a few episodes like this . The early 60s green was ok - the late 60s ‘Darling Lili’ was not!
  11. Like so many preservation movements which ran steam whilst main line steam was still extant (Bluebell, KWVR etc) the RPSI felt no need to replicate the grey dullness that could be seen in all its authenticity around them! I also suspect that the shed staff at York Road were rather keen on sprucing her up.
  12. I always liked the early preservation black she had, with red rods and shiny brass door handle, as here on the N Kerry tour. This must have looked wonderfully smart as she mingled with the half-derelict WTs around York Road in 1968. The green, I think, was a legacy of her cameo in the FGT movie in 78, although hugely overshadowed by 184’s scenes, 186 featured in the Cobh scenes. Both engines seen together in green in this 1979 pic. Images courtesy RPSI website.
  13. Agreed - nice work on those arches! I like 1mm board too, @2996 Victor. With a sharp knife it’s easily worked, and 90 degree fillets in the corners, with a honeycomb interior, soon gives a good strong shell. Takes paint nicely too. And I love Rocket card glue. It is very runny so like superglue, small doses, or it tends to dry in resin-like bumps. Don’t ask me how I know…
  14. Sure there’s some bloke in Wicklow turning them out hand over fist as it is!
  15. The only SLNC engine available in any commercial form is the Small Tank class - from SSM in 7mm. Really should build mine…. Large Tank and Lough Tank are down to the individual and a sheet of brass!
  16. Working their way round the island, having done GSW, GN, and CBSC, an MGW, BCDR or NCC loco would be rather nice, with scope for some rather nice liveries in all cases. I’m not holding out hope for an SLNC Large Tank….
  17. Lovely Ernie. Let us hope that one day you discover a similarly large cache of SLNC snaps which merits a similar Flickr blitz! The Lawderdale one is a lovely cameo.
  18. Think it must be Blackrock - and plans are afoot in Cork to restore the footbridge. The red brick station building can be seen in both the historic and contemporary photos, even if greenery has camouflaged much else. https://www.corkcity.ie/en/council-services/news-room/press-releases/work-to-begin-on-blackrock-station-refurbishment.html
  19. The dereliction is clearly well advanced by 1963, suggesting a closure some considerable time before. Blackrock on the C B and P ?
  20. With the quality of so much Irish RTR nowadays, much to be said for a photo plank - esp if you haven’t room for much of a layout. I’ve always had to build tiny layouts of late and they make great stages for experimenting- all the more so given the filters etc even a smartphone offers. Last year I had a play with some daylight and cotton wool…
  21. Good books are always money well spent, and worth it if they help you raise your game. Excellent work as ever, David. That image of Fermanagh rolling in is sublime.
  22. The happy days before track permits! Look at the two jokers on the tender….according to Galteemore snr, it was standing room only on the tender that trip. Lovely winter sunshine at Stranorlar too, which my dad also liked - he managed two trips in 59 before it shut. Looks like an ex Ballymena coach at stage left
  23. That is lovely work Ken - nice mix of technologies too. Those singles are a most interesting proposition to get running well, as I know from an MGW one! Lovely looking little engine.
  24. Indeed, Humbrol do a bespoke ‘buffer beam red’, which I have used. Many modellers actually use a dusky pink, which is what the real thing looks like fairly quickly in service.
  25. Well the forum’s going to be quiet tonight as everyone goes to their layout and tries out those doors…
