  7. Hi Timmy, Welcome to the site. May I suggest going to a 10' x 4' 6" layout, this will take the train set look away from the layout and give you some long straights and room for expansion. As your model railway is in the early stages I would suggest you switch to DCC (Digital Command Control) here's a few links to explain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Command_Control http://www.dccconcepts.com/index_files/DCCtenreasonstogo.htm You can get a basic DCC controller cheap enough, and your locos will need a decoder chip. You will get plenty of advice here on the forum. Post some pictures as you go

    DC to DCC

Hi Cogeyl, DCC is the best way to go. You can fit decoder chips into your locos and hard wire DCC decoder chips into older ones. Cost would be around €20 per loco. A DCC controller can set you back anything from €100 to €1000. The best piece of advice I can give you is to choose your DCC controller carefully, I am planning to change mine to the NCE Power Cab 5 amp system. You can get an NCE Power Cab starter set for £136 stg and its a great system offering all the functions and easily upgradeable to the 5 amp system as your layout grows. I found this link good http://www.dccconcepts.com/index_files/DCCtenreasonstogo.htm The big advantages to DCC is constant power on the track, so locos can have lights on while stationary, you can run multiple locos on the same track at the same time at different speeds. You can fit sound to your locos. You can double head. The list goes on. Good luck with the changeover

    New IÉ logo...

The grey is very drab, much preferred the black and silver. Bring back the Super Train livery I say

  22. That's a very big gap, can you slide the rail closer? The baseboard can play a big part in expansion, if you use soft wood and ply the soft wood will expand and contract quite considerably. I use MDF as it is very stable and doesn't move very much.
  23. `My plan is to control the points separately from the DCC controller, I haven't decided on the JMRI and a Sprog or analogue yet. I'm deffo going for the NCE power cab pro 5 amp system, after using Anthony's I really liked it, so easy to use.
