The Allegheny chucked out 7,500hp at 40mph, so probably the highest most usable power. The boilers were good for 8,000. No modern diesel gets near that. Nope, the Allegheny was. The Big Boy was bigger and faster mind you. The Allegheny was built for heavy coal slogging up the mountains. The Big Boys were built for fast freight. No weakling themselves mind you but the higher speed meant less tractive effort.

Open day this Saturday 10:30-17:30 based around O gauge at the MRSI base on Dorset Street. I believe us general public are welcome. It could be worthwhile if you want to learn more about the senior scale (Like I do!)

+1. Don't mind 66s too much myself but they did do away with a lot of variety. 59s had some better liveries and their underframe is more interesting. Great locos overall. I have a Lima one buried somewhere but will celebrate with the credit card when a new generation top spec model is released. Here's hoping Bachmann sort me out.
