A very limited range of Bedford W-irons are in S4 Stores, but not the 5'3" ones which I think are long lost.

If Des is away doing his day job in theatreland, it could be some time before he gets back. Bill Bedford used to produce sprung W-irons for 21mm but, when he transferred the production to Eileen's Emporium (also now long defunct) the 21mm irons didn't resurface. They are probably long lost now. The alternative, I suppose is to start with a P4-compatible W-iron and then graft in a section to widen it.

Update: P4 rewheeling completed in about one hour, without needing to adopt any of the YouTube video methods. Two micro screwdrivers to unclip the bogie baseplates are all that's needed. Here's how I did it -
£250 tops, if you can wangle it, I reckon.

Sorry to hear this. Condolences to his family. He leaves the world of Irish railway modelling an incredible legacy and it is to be hoped that his work will not be squandered by those who succeed him. Requiescat in pace. May God be with him always.

There is a school of thought in Ireland - mostly amongst those who will always loathe the British and would do anything to undermine them - that the Russians should be invited to set up military bases in Ireland. That way Ireland gets to have serious military hardware on its soil without having to pay for it (always a plus), and also gets to keep the British on their toes.

Manning Wardle type driving wheels are available from Alan Gibson Workshop, as are universal coupling rods, so "all it needs" is a chassis to match if the wheelbase is known...

I remember a feature long ago, in the 1979 Model Railway Constructor Annual, which described a dual-purpose layout that could run either UK-outline stock, or SNCF. It was the French part I was interested in, as some of the locomotives were built from baked bean tins, a remarkably effective technique with corrosion seemingly not a problem.
