Thanks for all the help and suggestions everybody, just a quick query in relation to the accessories outlet for my controller, is this always active or does the dial have to be turned up in order for it to supply power, the controller in question is a gaugemaster combi. Currently awaiting the chance to pick up some new construction materials but in the meantime I said I'd plan the turntable design for the branch as all RTR ones seem too large, basically the plan was to use a lazy Susan type design with a bearing underneath the....... stage? ( I don't know what the revolving part the loco sits on is called.) May be motorised if possible but the main focus will be getting current back into the track once it's revolved so may require the hand of god, at least for a while. Also I was considering purchasing point motors (yes I really am on a budget) and was just wondering if they require a lot of electronic knowhow to get up and running or if a newbie would be able to install a set that was reasonably reliable. No pictures at the moment as I am yet to put pen to paper with these plans but I just said I'd post them here in case anyone with a bit of experience had any advice on the topic.

This new layout, which will hopefully get further than the last one I started on this Forum, Is as the title suggests a quite branch terminus shunting layout set at the tail end of CIE steam or as some people may say "the best era". All going well it will feature a small station building, goods shed and other lineside structures (any suggestions?) The operation of passenger services will depend on whether push pull trains operated in this period using steam traction? The station shell roof (supports are temporary) started off as a goods shed but seems to have turned itself into a W&T Tramore station style structure. All suggestions are welcome and wish me luck. (Excuse the mess)

Being the young lad in question who had the pleasure of talking to WestCorkRailway on Sunday can I just say thank you everyone for pitching in and throwing your suggestions out there. It's nice to be able to put a face to names on here and Hopefully you'll be able to see a bit of progress soon with at least one the ideas mentioned above. All I know is I may get some of Lesley's wagons, and maybe just maybe a Silver fox Shunter. Im not very era picky ( which I've heard can be more of a curse than a blessing) so am hoping to accumulate a range of Irish stock starting with the easiest, and the cheapest! Thanks everyone.

Having been to Yorkshire this year, I can say you're absolutely right. There just seems to be more of a cultural appreciation amongst the people there for the railways

What with Halloween being literally right round the corner, it struck me that I didn't know of any ghost stories about Irish railways unlike their British counterparts. Anyone know of any?

Such a shame seeing it being used as a shed in such bad condition.

Sorry to plague you with questions right off the bat, but as you seem to know what you're doing I was wondering if there's any advice you'd have for someone a bit less experienced. What are the essential tools? Again sorry to pester you right away.

Sigh... it takes me twice as long just to do a bodge job if cutting some landscape foam. This really is something to drool over.

Just finished the interior of the signal box to a standard that I'm happy with, @Patrick Davey it was an almighty infuriating challenge but I managed to complete the levers scratchbuilt with paperclips and pins followed by painting of the base. Thanks for your help though. The armchair is a bit scraggy but let's say it's well used by the tired signalman. The lamp is just a basic led with wires going down a cotton bud. As you can see it looks a lot better from the front which is lucky. Surprised to see how much support this is getting and a huge thanks to everyone.

Thanks for all the positive motivation, I'm gonna try my best with the signal box levers but may have to resort to the kits if I can't achieve the standard, The idea with the layout is that it's set nowhere in particular but somewhere in Ireland, so I haven't really thought about whats going to run on it. Don't be shocked when you see an NCC jinty shunting goods next to a cork express!

Started my first layout project recently, don't think my modelling skills are quite as good as they could be but that's what it's all about isn't it, getting better bit by bit. Anyway the layout is set nowhere in particular but somewhere in Ireland probably a mainline. (thank God we don't have 4 tracks!). This is reflected in the name. Ballyonait is an anglicised version of Baile Aon áit which directly translated means anywhere town. It's set from around the 1930s to the late fifties so I may need a bit of help from any experts as to what's allowed and what's not. Right now it's just a baseboard with track and buildings some scratch built, some kit built, all of which need modification and more detail. Right now I'm trying to scratchbuild an interior for the Metcalf signal box. Anybody know if this is suitably Irish or any modifications that can make it so? Goods loading platform, one of my first scratchbuilds Interior mocked up with bluetack needs painting and additional improvements. Looks a little shabby right now but bear with me The entire layout for now. Excuse the mess.
