  1. S scale is 1:64. We deal in 1:76.2 - but scale is slightly irrelevant here. We deal in a track gauge of 16.5 mm, which is 4.5mm out of gauge for the 5'3" so making us underscale. Traditional irish modellers should be 21mm . S scale modellers have a gauge of 22.4mm, which makes their track and wheelsets closer to our 21mm standard. Heres where scale comes in - if you want exact 3'5/6/7" wheelsets, you can get them in 1:64, but not in scale and gauge . Confused yet? Essentially the stock and locos in that article are pretty high on the Moogle - Holman scale. 1 being plain crazy small, 10 being crazy full stop. Richie.;
  2. Can we make stuff up for the craic, as long as its some way believeable? Brian Cowen as train driver for Bord na Mona Narrow Gauge?

I think a lot of us who live in the shadow of croker wouldn't agree, it's the only time the garda numbers are at civilised numbers. And as far as Dub fans are concerned? The greatest shower of fairweather fans I've ever seen. Rainy friday night for a league match in Parnell Park and you'd be lucky to fill a DART with the Dubs fans at it. Leinster final, and the "cardigan-round-the-light-blue-short-sleeved-shirt" brigade turn up for their annual northside pilgrimmage. Give em a double header in croker like last week, and the dubs only show up to watch themselves, not bothering with the other match on. And ask them to name more than 5 on the panel, and apparently Jason Sherlock is still playing. . Anyhoo Treatymen to take Liam McCarthy south, Mayo to take Sam wesht. R.
  4. Cheers Des, but I'm not that confident just yet. It's either a George Wilkinson or a JS Mulvany (nearly sure it's his). Trying to find the location that matches the track layout, telegraph poles, the building, and the roadway for the Anglia. I also thought it may have been foynes at one point, but it's unlikely that wide bodied coach would be in a siding. The mystery deepens
  5. Yeah, tis indeed. As a firm DC man, I thought it had already gone this way?!? Is it a case of just one dropper and super clean track, and off you go? Will we see the advent of Lithium Ion batteries within steam tenders, 201's or egv's then and the dirtiest track imaginable? Just park your loco on the "programming track" just like you'd do with the DeWalt? Truly wireless layouts??? Patent office here I come.... R.
  6. Lovely work Moogle, keep up the madness. How long is that 6 wheeler, just to have some perspective on how damn small it is?? R.
  7. Oh man where to start? Well we had a whopper discussion on this a good few months ago, on what airbrush to buy - http://irishrailwaymodeller.com/showthread.php/485-What-Air-Brush I put up an non-exhaustive list of paints for airbrush thread, might help with deciding what route to go. http://irishrailwaymodeller.com/showthread.php/1337-what-paint-for-what-airbrush-thread Personally I prefer acrylics. Quick drying, less stinky, easier to clean the airbrush. (High Quality Respirator is a must with either) I don't have a fume extraction hood, so the smell of enamels tends to fill up my house. If I had a manshed or garage, I'd use them. I always use enamels though for weathering stock. Hope that helps. R.
  8. The letters are CIE reversed so that they would be broadcast into a pilot's eyes or onto a cloud, batman style. As for the location, it looks suspiciously like the MGWR station in Athlone, with the engine shed behind the photographer. The cut stone on the far building is too good to be a goods shed, and the chimneys match. Possibly the ornate water tower on the extreme right of the photo? Or a cement silo? Would love to know the story behind this. R
  9. I got that set a few years ago, and it did me in good stead, til I burnt it out. Preferrable to the Lidl offering. R What are you planning on spraying and what type of paint are you thinking of using?
  10. Sounds like yet another decent skin of the model railway fraternity I never got to meet. My sympathies to his family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Let's hope the signal was for a through road. R
  11. I know it's black and white, but you can clearly make out the black and tan livery. Prototype for everything eh !? I'd certainly be interested in them. Richie.
  12. Tom, If you can get your hands on a few of these coaches and do a respray, you are in business. They are the same as the ones you have. http://www.locomotionmodels.com/model-railways/oo-gauge-4mm/coaching-stock/lms/bachmann-34-251d-57ft-corridor-composite-1st-and-3rd-lms-crimson.htm
  13. in advance of JHB coming on, they are all frauds. 57' is a fraud, the layout is a fraud, and the green colour is a fraud. But. We all have a few, they look good, are approximately correct, and unless you eat sleep and drink Des Coackams Publications or the GSWR Carraige Book (about a foot thick), no excitement should arise. Unless its a 4 wheeled thomas the tank engine number masquerading as MGWR, now that's wrong...... R.
  14. We've settled on "Scraatch, Bilders & Sons" as a name to reserve a spot in pubs. All very victorian! Some are happy scratchin themselves, (wrenn) some are happy bildin stuff (us) and others are happy hurl from the ditch (anyone else in Dublin who fancies a meet up) might stick this in another thread. R.
  15. Young padawan, have you not your fingers to burn on a forthcoming brass kit from K&M?
  16. The weathered one looks ridiculous and wont fit into the pristine bachmann rakes that most have. But the pristine one will shift by the ton. As far as the MRSI wagon is concerned, everyone here should be a member and have one automatically. I've said too much already! R.
  17. Shock horror Vincent! Not a 40' Container in sight! Great photos though, even if the poor stock is blighted with graffiti. Such is the way in France in my limited experience. Plus ca change.
  18. Jaysus, that's hungry....
  19. Well said Bosko. Truly inspirational stuff. Just love the trackplan, it alone just oozes rural charm. R
  20. Very very nice John.
  21. "Rumours that the Portarlington Stop in both directions was for The Wanderer was met with a blunt denial" Great photos as always and the history by Josefstadt. Thanks. R.
  22. Oh lordy, what a superb collection. Especially like the shot of the roundhouse in Broadstone, been wondering what it looked like for ages. Cheers John, thanks for posting.
  23. It's more likely a 7 plank wagon with a flying snail on it. Richie "Keeping your expectations in check since moses was a youngfla'"

Further infos: http://irishrailwaymodeller.com/showthread.php/780-Liveries-of-Great-Southern-Railway I know that Anto ^ did a Woolie in grey, but for the life of me I can't find it.
  25. Kieran, Take a look at Wanderers Photographs of the Goods Shed in Cahir Even though it is a 3 bay loading side/3 window trackside configuration, the same would be true for Clonmel, albeit it is a 4 bay loading side/4 window trackside configuration. The load bays themselves would be 2438mm - 8' wide, though I haven't measured it, and the gap between is usually a multiple to suit the roof structure trusses, possibly 12'. The far side of the goods shed is scarred where they retrofitted a chimney, the only example of a goods shed I can think of with a chimney. HTH. Richie.
