I'd highly recommend a chat with Dave, having a lovely, clean, absolutely level baseboard is a must, and you can even build in levels and inclines at baseboard level - making the rest of the work much easier! My only regret so far was having done my terminus boards before meeting Dave, and now having to live with the unevenness of the ply

8x4 is a good size for a small terminus or rural station layout.

It's amazing the impact sound, smoke and lights has on steamers... Martin that did those for me has been up to his eyes in recent years, I must poke him to see if he'll do some more, and capture some video on Amiens!

Pretty sure the Virginian Triplex was the most powerful, but it could only manage a max of 5Mph for a few minutes! (it was designed entirely to bank heavy trains up mountains!) Here is a pic with some humans to scale!
