You've just reminded me of a very very crude cardboard 141 body I fabricated on top of a Triang-Hornby E3001 chassis in the early 70s (i.e. from R644A train set). But it got damp in the attic, went soggie and warped out of shape.

Wow that's staggering. A shadow of the mainline city gateway it once was. From your pics it looks like the only platform left is what was one of the bay platforms. Wonder why they didn't at least keep the 2nd bay track for overflow and stabling. I suppose they don't need much more for the 22k trams since Rosslare services no longer operate. Must be interesting time tabling from a logistical point of view with only one platform available. The RPSI rake looks great with the mix of liveries and the grey 076 looks great running beside the LMS look-a-like maroon GSV

Nice pics, especially the full rake. Waterford station looks to have been rationalised to a much reduced layout. How many platforms are in use these days?

Hi Mike. I don't think so. But you have brought back memories of my first ever CIE black and tan coach hand painted from what I think was an old Triang Hornby 'Caledonian' coach. It used to be LMS maroon with yellow/bronze lining around the windows. My first ever hand repaint many moons ago when I was about 14 or 15. This was my first Irish livery coach before the Lima Mk1 CIEs came on the market in the 1970s. You have jogged my memory of trying multiple mixes of humbrol paints to get some sort of 1960s CIE tan colour. Totally understand they would not look like the 'real' world if clean, but just personally speaking, I'd prefer clean white bubbles with blue logos having the option of weathering them oneself rather than factory enforced weathering. The photo of the cream white bogie bubbles in the publicity PDF looked great and could look visually attractive on a layout.

That white livery and two tone blue logo combination looks great on the large bubbles.

I spent a lot of time on IOM in the 80s and 90s. Fond memories of a most peculiar and interesting place that seemed lost in time. No speed limit on the mountain road and terms like road rage did not even exist in their vocabulary, quite the opposite. Fond memories of catching a train ride regularly at Ballajora. Tourism their former economic golden egg was in rapid decline by the mid 90s. Cute little airport back then too with 'La Rosette' a cutsie and fine eatery just up the road in Ballasalla. They still had the 'birch' back then as they were technically outside the EEC, so had almost zero crime levels and door locks were rarely used. The mountain railway had spectacular views but I did often wonder about the gradient.

Can't see how it would have worked as our network is too small for competition to work. The only way to have 'competition' might have been state ownership of the network, selling capacity to multiple competing operators on the same routes, but I can't see how the economics of scale could have worked for fragmenting operators with such a small population and only three proper sized cities on the island. Anyway the motorways have won. In the very very long term it seems inevitable that the entire network will eventually be forced to go electric.
