Weathering is something you get better at the more you do and learn to observe what the colours really are
on the real thing and never over do it.
I would use 6 or 7 different colours which helps to create the right overall look.
I have found acrylic on enamel to work ok, as long as it's not to heavy and wet.
I have had a lot more trouble with acrylic varnish spray cans, it needs to be well shaken not stirred.
I called into Halfords today to get some grey primer.
For 500ml it used to be £7.49 but now it costs £11.99.
So I will be getting it elsewhere from now on.
