Galteemore Posted May 26, 2021 Share Posted May 26, 2021 (edited) Inspired by @J-Mo Artsrecent photo of an 009 Clogher Valley ‘Blessingbourne’ I thought I’d best finish off mine - although in fairness I did only start it 10 days ago! The real thing was a disaster with appalling adhesion - but a very smart loco. An ideal fit for a Kato bogie chassis - almost! The motor is wide just where the boiler is meant to curve inwards, but I have tried to disguise that. All scratch built -bar the handrail knobs. I turned up the dome and chimney from brass bar. She has separate wire handrails, glazing fore and aft, real coal and a crew. The lettering is a distinct feature of the real thing. Although mine is a little high on the tank sides it hopefully captures the arc of the original. It’s a bit crude but for a first 3mm effort I’m happy enough. In this scale the emphasis is more on trains in the landscape than microscopic detail - I hope....As you can see, she’s a bit smaller than the 7mm loco I have just built ! Worsley Works etches provided sides ends and floor, most of the latter being cut away to fit in a little Kato motor. It’s far from perfect but runs like a dream. Finished in weathered GS colours. I have one of those Worsley Works railcars in my stash of kits to build one day. I have always thought TTn3 is ideal for Irish narrow gauge, and not perhaps as popular as it could be. He's not on this forum, but one of my mates built a TTn3 Irish layout called 'Caher Patrick' about 25 years ago. He was using Graham Farish Compound 4-4-0 chassis for Cavan & Leitrim & Cork, Blackrock & Passage tanks, & Minitrix 2-6-2 chassis for Tralee & Dingle 2-6-0 tanks. I think it appeared in Railway Modeller sometime around 2002-2004 (sorry can't find my copies of RM to confirm exact dates). He was using things like the smaller Dundas Models Festiniog 'style' 009 coaches like DM59, DM61 & DM64 as Irish coaches in 3mm scale (without the end balconies), they were surprisingly effective. There aren't many photos online of his layout and stock, there are some on the NGRM Online forum, but there's no point in me posting links to that forum as you need to sign up to it in order to see the photos. The driver is a Preiser TT German station master who is not at all happy to find himself demoted from Hauptbahnhof to hedge-hopping tramway ! The CVR loco and coach are both Shapeways, John, from David Hurst. Loco runs on Kato pocket line chassis drastically cut down, and has had handrails, whistle, pipework, cab interior, glazing, and real coal added, with my own fabricated smoke box dart. Transfers are Fox 1mm lettering. The coach is a simple Shapeways, almost clips together, albeit with brass mesh added to the ends to replicate the original. Runs on Peco Welsh NG bogies. He also does the loco in 00n3, which may interest you: I think it was a collaboration with Paul Titmuss. The Clogher valley locos are a bit of a trap for the unwary 009 modeller as they will look far too big on 2’ scale track, so he also does a scaled down version for 009 ! Galteemore Posted July 8, 2021 Author Share Posted July 8, 2021 (edited) One of my earliest memories of trips to Leitrim in the 70s involves the corrugated iron shops - now closed - between Belcoo and Manorhamilton. That’s shops made out of the stuff, not retailing it…..For Drumkeeran Road, I’ve tried building one from plastic sheet etc. Crude but 2’ rule and all that - it’ll be at the back of the layout. The sequence illustrates how the backscene gradually fades into obscurity as detail is added. Fair bit of tidying up to do but getting there. Body is a 3D print mounted on an old Farish chassis - the built in moulded chassis was a bit sub par and needed broken off! Railings built up from plastic rod and entomological pins. Needs a bit of weathering but priority right now is building stock for Saturday’s show !! Have also created a little cameo of two locals chatting on the road….
