Flying Scotsman 4472
I went to the Bangor Show on Saturday and thanks to Warbonnet and A4 Mallard injecting me with the British steam Bug I was going to buy Tornado. A bit unsure I left without buying one as I just prefer my Irish stock but after sleeping on it I changed my mind. Now the question is do I weather it or not. This one I'm trowing out there to you guys. If you decide yes she will be lightly weathered not filthy. Fran at this stage is having his second heart attack=)) but its up to you. You decide remember very lightly weathered I promise Hopefully next on my list will be Hornby's The Flying Scotsman hHcwsb1HH10%3D Edited April 23, 2012 by Anthony
Garfield
I don't think I've seen a mark on her in any of the photos I've seen. Maybe just a little bit of weathering around the cylinders and connecting rods, a little bit around the chimney and safety valve, and some water splashes around the filler cap? That'd make her look like she'd been working hard on a railtour for the day... Edited April 23, 2012 by Garfield
BosKonay
I reckon a very light touch would look fantastic
Warbonnet
What you should've done is bought a BR liveried A1 and gone mad! I'd be bad enough, but you might just kill Bren with the shock! http://www.southern-images.co.uk/lightbox/index.php?module=media&pId=102&id=4384 http://www.themodelcentre.co.uk/60124/prod_113.html

RedRich
Seeing that she is in as preserved condition Anto I would leave her untouched. Rich,
Flying Scotsman 4472
Seeing that she is in as preserved condition Anto I would leave her untouched. Rich, Yes Rich I understand but you got to remember that she is probably one of the busiest working steam locos in the UK at present. I want to portray her as she is in real life. Not filthy but in a preserved working condition. One big let down with the model is the coal in the tender it looks nothing like coal. So that's one thing that will be addressed with real coal

It just would'nt be right to have a spotless loco on a detailed layout like yours, it just seems out of place.
heirflick
you know me any weathering anto, but even though she is preserved, she will have , after a few runs, dusty undersides and the tender will have coal dust esp around the footplate. so yes a TINY bit of weathering is called for! Flying Scotsman 4472
Right so it's looking like a small bit of weathering then. I hopefully will get round to it later in the week and I will post some pics up on my workbench for you guys
djkonore
Ye, go for it Anto, even if she's straight out of the wash bay she'd have some shadowing or some watermarks or dust or something. Those uniform block colours just would'nt look like that on the real thing. I guess the trick is to make it look more realistic, without actually making her look like she's been weathered, if ye know what I mean. Flying Scotsman 4472
I think its going to be a challenge to get the look just right with out over doing it or under doing it I'm studying plenty of pics if any of you guys have any good photos of Tornado post them up here so we can have a butchers. Flying Scotsman 4472
If you look closely you can see a lot of dirt on the top of the boiler and the cab roof its a pity Bachmann never made the rain cover from the cab roof to the tender

Where as, in that pic of the real thing, the top of the boiler at the front is grey, as is the cab roof...
Flying Scotsman 4472
It does look grey Conor but in fact its not its a combination of smoke and ash rain etc and if you were to airbrush/weathering power grey onto the roof or boiler it would not look anything like the picture. Hopefully I will get a couple of hours tomorrow to make a start at Tornado.
Flying Scotsman 4472
I fitted a TCS DP2X-UK to Tornado yesterday and I have to say although she is a beautiful runner I do feel that my Hornby steamers are slightly better runners at slow speed using the same decoder. They seem to be smoother but the Bachmann Tornado does have better pulling power up the inclines.
