Why is 077 sought after?

Hi everyone,

don’t know if it’s a general observation or if there is something to it but noticed 077 seems to be an extremely sought after model. Is there a reason behind it or have I just noticed a completely irrelevant trend?

The orange IE era would probably be the most in demand for the 071 Class.

Think that there were three released in that livery, two large logo and one small logo.

EDIT:

Yup, 077 large logo, 078 small logo and 085 large logo weathered, were the three 071’s from that era.

From a nostalgia perspective, I’d hazard a guess that these three hit the sweet spot.

When IRM / A/S released the A Class, if memory serves me correctly, the black and orange (I can’t bring myself to call them black and tan due to negative connections) livery, and the latest IR liveries, were quickest to sell out.

SuperTrain was a bit slower to sell, and the silvers and greens were the slowest.

That one is insanity

Finished at almost €650, but was less than €300 a few hours before finishing. Lot of red mist floating around. I guess some folk are assuming that there’ll never be an 071 again, with the passing of Paddy Murphy, but…..

Similar thing happened to the original 1981 Hornby APT. Values for full sets, individual cars and even spares on eBay ran quite high for a long time. Then Hornby released their 21st century model a few years ago, and values of the 1981 model are on the floor as a result.

One can only hope... I really wouldn't mind one (or a few)- same with a new 201 as having just gotten into the world of Irish railway modelling, it's looking a tad more expensive than the British stuff I am used to! I was looking forward to the new Enterprise livery but I guess time will tell as to what happens...

I reckon 077 is popular because it is the only version  that is not weathered in the IE livery as 085 was factory  weathered. If someone was wanting to do a respray of one of the gray livery 071s,077 is the donor.

And 078.

There were three.

078 only had the small marker lights,085 and 077 were the only orange IE locos with larger marker lights.

So 078 in IE livery doesn’t count as IE livery because of the marker lights?

I think the point is that it represents an earlier era before the larger marker lights were fitted, and that reduces its 'desirability'.

I didn't  say that,It wouldn't  suit as a donor for a respray into battleship gray livery because of the smaller marker lights.

I doubt that, given the scarcity of 071’s in general.

If somebody is looking for a donor to re-spray into grey, then 071, 077, 082, and 085 are ALL ideal donors.

I don’t think that the weathering on 085 bears any weight if it’s a re-spray donor.

I have not yet seen any indication that there is less demand for 078 than there is for 077.

There's also been a fair degree of price-gouging involved as some have bought to punt on later...

We really should have piggybacked this onto the fuel protests.

Also got both supertrains for €139 each in Mark's.  It was a special time but seems quite expensive at the time as 141 and 181 cost me €80 when released.

And I do remember buying latest steam locos from hattons around 2010-12 for €60-80 delivered.

Being a suitable donor has little to do with it.

I have the 3 IE liveried 071's and 077 is the better looking of the 3 in my opinion.

The factory weathering on 085 isn't great, and brings the model down slightly. 078 carries the smaller IE logo, which I like, but the majority who model that era seem to lean towards the larger logo.

You get the best of both with 077 which makes it that bit more desirable.

The Roman god Janus would have been very much at home in Ireland.

When I was looking for donors a couple of years ago, maybe three or four years back, to go grey, 082 and 085 were the easiest to find. 071 was impossible to source, as was 077.

Going back another few years before that, 077 and 078 were the elusive pair, equally hard to track down.

So on the IE liveries, the factory-weathered largo logo 085 was the least popular, 077 and 078 were both the same.

I recall people here on the forum counting themselves lucky to find both 077 and 078.

I was thinking of doing that as I have two models of 077, but that’s why I wanted to ask first and see was I shooting myself in the foot if they were really popular.

Id rather keep it pristine and do a trade for some 071 that I can use as a donor if people are looking for 077, means it’s a win win for both parties
