What a pity Erne was scrapped as it was painted in Swilly green

That change of paint might have been the reason for the scrapping. The story was that Dr. Cox had bought the engine (along with all the other stock he had bought) and all his purchases were marked with "USA" on them, pending the shipping which never came.

Painting Erne in green might have tidied her up cosmetically, but it also removed any markings of Dr. Cox's ownership so there was nothing to warn off the scrapmen when they came by in 1967 or 1969 (depending on which source you read).

Hammond Lane Metal Company of Dublin dealt with much of the scrapping of the CDR lines, but it's not known if they came back for Erne or whether a different contractor took the job.

My own research suggests it was scrapped in 1968. Scrapmen were told not to scrap anything painted red but the Swilly busmen had painted Erne with green Swilly paint about 1965.

I have a lot of slides and negatives to put on flickr with more on the way so today I have added the 30 slides of Stranorlar, Barnesmore & Lough Eske featuring Meenglas on the demolition train  and light engine in the Summer of 1960. They are at the end of the CDRJC album (also at the latest photostream upload) Album is  https://www.flickr.com/photos/irishswissernie/albums/72157662649694575/

Click on the above link if you want to see the album, there are now 502 images on it so it will take you a while to get to the last page.

I have had these  UTA May 1964 slides for a few months whilst awaiting the rest of set of 130 odd images. Unfortunately the 65  odd missing slides have not come to light so I will start adding the ones already held. The 4 below are all Newry Edward Street. Railcar 104 failed on arrival so 36 was substituted for the run on to Warrenpoint and return. 45 was on a goods in the yard. 11 May 1964

I acquired recently a batch of slides taken by someone who was travelling on 2 Tours on 23 March 1968 , ex SLNC from Belfast to Larne & the RPSI Belfast Docks Tour behing Guinness No 1. Thankfully (from my point of view anyway!) only the odd views of the Tours arrived; there are others on Flickr in my Archive already. The majority of the slides cover the Spoil trains plus some views of the railcars covering the passenger service and the odd station view. There are 3 images I don't know the location so I will put them on below along with a link to the Album. Lastly can anyone who travelled on the Tours remember what the weather was like the day before which was Friday 22 March as I think that is when the Spoil trains etc which were taken when it was sunny with some snow on the hills. Others are gloomy which fits in with the usual manky weather on the Tours on the Saturday.
