Kirley Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 The Museum At RPSI Whitehead is now open with Guides to take you round the site. Just some of the treasures to be seen there. Quote
popeye Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 Looks great. I must get up there soon. Super pic's, thanks. Quote
Lough Erne Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Derailed, Yes that is a trailer (poss no 5, I can't find my notes) from the Bessbrook and Newry. It is at whitehead for detailed examination, costing and hopefully overhaul to original condition. It seems to be in reasonably sound condition and appears to have had its floor sympathetically rebuilt/ renewed at some time also. A private individual/ group are funding its overhaul. Currently it is sitting on the ex Dundalk boiler trolley in a frame specially built for it (bolts onto original underframe) to make life easy for lifting/ moving it around. Quote
Mike 84C Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Thanks for posting those excellent photographs Kirley. It looks like a good place to visit and very professional. Quote
Weshty Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Wow, good looking museum. I like the selection. Quote
jhb171achill Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Derailed, Yes that is a trailer (poss no 5, I can't find my notes) from the Bessbrook and Newry. . It's No. 6. No. 5, I believe, was an open (i.e. roofless!) Quote
jhb171achill Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Brilliant looking museum. Hope to go in the next two weeks. One criticism, if I may, and it's not of the museum: the RPSI website has disappeared and been replaced by that for the museum. On the website now the actual society, and its main line operations both NIR and IE, seem peripheral. The message should be strongly put out that the Museum is a subsidiary of the RPSI, not the other way round. Quote
DERAILED Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Here's a couple of pics of the trailer that were sent to me when it was at the convent at Bessbrook - I'm assuming that's the one? The photographs were taken in 1987 by Thomas Mathers - Newry - I often wondered what became of him and the trailer! Quote

The new website (whilst needed) has lost the main focus, and is very much "Whitehead Mueseum....oh and we also run trains". The list of previously operated trains has disappeared, along with detailed loco histories. Good design, awful content Quote
StevieB Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 Along with the loss of access to an incredible amount of historical items - Irish Railfans News to name just one. Stephen Quote
snapper Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 The old rail fan news and old issues of 5 foot 3 are supposed to be coming back but no date (not even an aspirational date) has been given. The other information about locos and waggons is also supposed to return but in the meantime we are left with this mess which lacks some basic features like links to the Dublin and Belfast operations Facebook pages and twitter Supposedly it was a rush job due to time tables being imposed by the external funding. DiveController Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 The website isn't doing you guys any favors right now Quote
Weshty Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 On the website now the actual society, and its main line operations both NIR and IE, seem peripheral. The message should be strongly put out that the Museum is a subsidiary of the RPSI, not the other way round. When I visited the site initially, I thought it was an offshoot site of the RPSI, not the updated RPSI itself. Now realising this is the case, the rebranding can at best be described as...unwise. Nevermind that the content is gone for the moment, the RPSI brand has been completely subsumed by focussing on the museum. Is this deliberate policy? Who designed it? Who signed off on the front page? Regarding the lack of content, why was this a rush job? How long did they have to set it up, if funding was such an issue? Quote
snapper Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Well this is a quote from the recent e-bulletin As for who thought it was a good idea , probably the same people who wont put the Dublin based Facebook or twitter links in the email bulletins. or put any Dublin based contact details on the website. There seems to be some confusion regarding the new website, especially in regard to accessing information not related to the museum, specifically membership. Maybe the membership details could be easier to find; but currently they are at: “About” -> “Become A Member” (here) The designers are still working on the website and in the fullness of time we hope to make it so that the museum is part of the RPSI, and not vice versa. But at the present, the funders are insisting that the branding should be museum-related. Note (1): The proposed Members’ private area is not yet running. Instructions on how to log in will be included in a Bulletin when it is available for use. Note (2): The programme of events for 2017 is now available. Quote
Weshty Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 "we hope to make it so that the museum is part of the RPSI, and not vice versa. But at the present, the funders are insisting that the branding should be museum-related." Who are the funders? Are they saying that they have got a bequest conditional that the Museum takes brand precedence? If this is the case, what are they waiting on to negate this? The RPSI Donations FAQ reads: Wherever possible we will respect and act upon your wishes, providing what you have requested is still possible and does not conflict with Society policy. .. Ultimately, if what you request is too restrictive, it may be necessary to turn down the bequest. The current Branding arrangement seems to override that a tad. Quote

Sounds like conditions attached to a grant. If that's the case, the RPSI would have known this when lodging the application... Quote
snapper Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 I believe the funding was part of the money for the creation of the museum Quote
