Lough Erne Posted March 13, 2017 Share Posted March 13, 2017 Derailed, Yes that is a trailer (poss no 5, I can't find my notes) from the Bessbrook and Newry. It is at whitehead for detailed examination, costing and hopefully overhaul to original condition. It seems to be in reasonably sound condition and appears to have had its floor sympathetically rebuilt/ renewed at some time also. A private individual/ group are funding its overhaul. Currently it is sitting on the ex Dundalk boiler trolley in a frame specially built for it (bolts onto original underframe) to make life easy for lifting/ moving it around. One criticism, if I may, and it's not of the museum: the RPSI website has disappeared and been replaced by that for the museum. On the website now the actual society, and its main line operations both NIR and IE, seem peripheral. The new website (whilst needed) has lost the main focus, and is very much "Whitehead Mueseum....oh and we also run trains". The other information about locos and waggons is also supposed to return but in the meantime we are left with this mess which lacks some basic features like links to the Dublin and Belfast operations Facebook pages and twitter Supposedly it was a rush job due to time tables being imposed by the external funding. When I visited the site initially, I thought it was an offshoot site of the RPSI, not the updated RPSI itself. Now realising this is the case, the rebranding can at best be described as...unwise. Nevermind that the content is gone for the moment, the RPSI brand has been completely subsumed by focussing on the museum. Is this deliberate policy? Who designed it? Who signed off on the front page? Regarding the lack of content, why was this a rush job? How long did they have to set it up, if funding was such an issue? There seems to be some confusion regarding the new website, especially in regard to accessing information not related to the museum, specifically membership. Maybe the membership details could be easier to find; but currently they are at: “About” -> “Become A Member” (here) The designers are still working on the website and in the fullness of time we hope to make it so that the museum is part of the RPSI, and not vice versa. But at the present, the funders are insisting that the branding should be museum-related. Note (1): The proposed Members’ private area is not yet running. Instructions on how to log in will be included in a Bulletin when it is available for use. Note (2): The programme of events for 2017 is now available. Are they saying that they have got a bequest conditional that the Museum takes brand precedence? If this is the case, what are they waiting on to negate this? The RPSI Donations FAQ reads: Wherever possible we will respect and act upon your wishes, providing what you have requested is still possible and does not conflict with Society policy. .. Ultimately, if what you request is too restrictive, it may be necessary to turn down the bequest. The current Branding arrangement seems to override that a tad.
