Kirley Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 The Derry to Coleraine train journey has been described as one of the most beautiful in the world A section of the railway linking the two biggest cities in Northern Ireland - Belfast and Londonderry - has been closed for the next nine months. The track between Derry and Coleraine is closed for major engineering works and will not reopen until April 2013. see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-foyle-west-19035968# Quote
Kirley Posted August 1, 2012 Author Posted August 1, 2012 Rail Works start in the North West. Some pictures taken this morning in Derry showing the formation of a Works Train. 8111 & 8113 with ballast wagons and some close-ups of bogies etc for a weathering guide. Quote
BabyGM Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Some great pics there Kirley Thanks for sharing:) Quote
snapper Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Nice pics. I know there is a fair bit of work to be done but a full closure for 9 months does seem like a awfully long time. Quote
Glenderg Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Top class bogie photos, plenty colour variations. Quote
heirflick Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 good stuff! always amazes me how clean the nir 071 always are! Quote
ttc0169 Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Great photos Kieran,I didn't realise that the ballast wagons have levers on one end to allow discharge of the ballast-I thought they were wheel operated. Quote
The Train Man Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 ??? 2 071's to haul a ballast train Great pics Quote
Railer Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 It's because there are not many run around points. NIR seem to send 111 and 113 out together alot on engineering trains lately. Also for back up in case one fails. It would take along time to get another loco for York Road. That leaves 112 as the only Enterprise thunderbird in York Road and a 201 in Connolly for the next 9 months. Quote
MOGUL Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact if one fails in a big way it can't be brought back to York road too easily except by low-loader.. Whereas 112 working at the other end of the line can easily be hauled back to York road and a NIR 201 or maybe 071 substituted. Don't think 071/111s are allowed work in multiple trainman.. Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Don't think 071/111s are allowed work in multiple I think they might be able to work in multiple in the North of Ireland there should be photos on line some where Quote
Railer Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 But are they double headding or is the second loco powered off. I know 2 111s were at the head of the Hunslet farewell tour and the lead loco was taken off about half way through. I don't think they were double headding for that. Quote
MOGUL Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Is that not a test train though as opposed to a service train, the one for the NI science park or a univerty to measure the effects of heavy passing trains on instruments in the 80s?? Nice pic too though Anto Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 There are pics on the net somewhere of 2 111's double heading a passenger train and also pics somewhere of 208 and 209 also working a passenger train heading over the river Lagan. Quote
201bhoy Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 There are pics on the net somewhere of 2 111's double heading a passenger train and also pics somewhere of 208 and 209 also working a passenger train heading over the river Lagan. Yeah that photo of the 201s was on Eire trains but it's not there anymore It was on a railtour somewhere. Quote
Kirley Posted November 28, 2012 Author Posted November 28, 2012 Work continues in the North West, some pictures taken this morning. On the battery charger!!! Quote
Guest hidden-agenda Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Lovely pics Kieran i think that,s the ballast wagon that derailed. Incidentally the 6 ballast wagons are going for a major over-haul next year i believe and may be getting air brakes among the other work planned. Quote
Kirley Posted April 16, 2013 Author Posted April 16, 2013 Now that the engineering works have finished (for a while) does anyone know the location of 8111 & 8113? I haven't see either about York Road Works. Quote
Guest hidden-agenda Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Check out Chris playfair pics or look in Irish railway news DMU section some nice pics of 8113 in the shed. I cant post a link using a different browser and its a nuisance. Quote
Kirley Posted April 17, 2013 Author Posted April 17, 2013 Thanks Gareth for the link. Good to know they are back safely even though one was “graffitied” in Derry. Quote
UP6936 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 not sure if you already know kirley, but I saw 111 and 3 ballast wagons parked up at York road last Sunday Quote
