  1. Got this from a colleague. Is it scaremongering or just good practice? CHINA'S BANKS DISINFECT OR DESTROY BANKNOTES China's central bank in Guangzhou announced it will destroy cash collected by hospitals, buses, and markets in coronavirus-afflicted areas to curb the outbreak's contagion, financial news outlet Caixin reported Saturday. The People's Bank of China ordered all paper currency with high exposure to the outbreak withdraw cash for either destruction or disinfection, according to Caixin. Commercial banks were told to place banknotes from infected areas aside, clean them, and hand them to the central bank. The coronavirus continues to spread around the world and most heavily hit China's population. The outbreak is responsible for 1,670 deaths with nearly 70,000 infected as of Sunday afternoon. Coronavirus has already prompted economists to lower their expectations for global growth, and major corporations have warned that the drag on global supply chains will likely hit quarterly results. The People's Bank of China will use high temperatures or ultraviolet light to disinfect bills and store the cash for more than 14 days before placing it back into circulation. Central banks around the world frequently destroy old notes to balance out the supply with new cash. The practice doesn't affect the money supply, though the coronavirus-related action is separate from such regular measures. An unnamed deputy chief at a large bank in Guangzhou told Caixin that, while customers will be asked where their deposited cash is from, "it would be difficult for such a measure to be completely effective." 2. Did Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown express interest when the layout had to move from Malahide Castle?
  3. Thanks Wrenneire. It's clear enough who crafted the model of the cabin, but did Dave build the original bricks and mortar structure too? 8118
  4. New to this thread and just wondering if that cabin would be one by McKenzie and Holland?
  5. All of what's on Noel's wish list and don't forget lighting and passengers. 8118
  6. IANG, I'd take your loco to someone competent at a model railway club or sales outlet and ask what can be done to suit your budget. Then enjoy running your train. I've done this with 2 Irish locos from the Hornby stable and my grandson thinks they're super. In time you will progress to more expensive models and you will still treasure your first experiences with your Lima loco and Galway rake. Enjoy it, it's your layout. 8118
  7. Original pre-order delivered this morning. Superb models that continue to set the standard. Thanks guys. 8118
  8. If NLI have got a caption wrong they'll happily checking it and corrected if you notify them. 8118
  9. https://www.geograph.ie/photo/3498199 The photos in the earlier posting show a caged barrier wagon for the ammonia train while the 1982 photo attached shows one uncaged. I've seen one other photo, dated 1982, with an uncaged barrier, and all of the remaining photos that I've seen are dated in the late 80s and 90s and show the caged barrier. So, is there a time period when they were uncaged/caged or were they mixed? 8118
  10. The CIE AEC 2600 class gets my vote too, and the other thing missing is steam. 8118
  11. … nice to have some extra loads for the freight yard and on the forklift truck. Agreed.
  12. I think this does the business. Open the Forums folder (first folder on left at top of screen) This displays all of the forums where you have unread content indicated by a black icon Hover over that black icon to see a message, 'Mark forum as read'. Click. Regards
  13. So, we'll never get to see the Fry models running and that's to be lamented. But, at least we can see them in cases. It is good that these have not disappeared into private collections never to be seen again, but are in a way archived on public display for future modellers to enjoy. From what I can see the displays will include locos, coaches and wagons. What about the O gauge layout? Will there be any displays of the railway buildings and other structures or will there be any displays of the original track and signaling? Will any examples of the modeller's craft of 40-50 years ago be on display? Looking forward to visiting soon. Are the opening times published and how much to get in? DART 8118 Youtube video

  15. I also like the Dublin & Blessington Steam Tramway Co. Locomotive No. 9. Is that a twin cab solution long, long before it's time? Photos that I know of are always black and white so it's good to see colour adding life to this loco. 8118
  16. If Hornby can do the Rocket and coaches, could one of the Irish manufacturers do the D&KR Hibernia Loco and coaches? 8118
  17. All done. Very best of luck lads.
  18. Happy Christmas to everyone on the forum and best wishes for a wonderful 2020. 8118
  19. Hi Eoin, You're being very forgiving of Google. Even if they were unsure about the 'First' they could always have marked the occasion of 185 years of Irish railways. But not a word. Also disappointed with the CIE group. Not a minute of celebration nor a word of commemoration. Maybe next year. I'm not familiar with the arguments made by historians other than I've often thought that 'they would say that theirs was first, wouldn't they. They'd spin it accordingly, and would give little credit to a wonderful Irish achievement. I think that the Stockton & Darlington is the most extraordinary claim of all. In my world a suburban or commuter service in 1834 would have been for the transport of city business-men who lived in the local suburbs. In this case I've wondered what city and what suburbs given that both Stockton and Darlington were small market towns. I also believe that when passenger trains were operated they were horse drawn. I guess it's all to do with definition. My tuppence worth to the historical debate. Meanwhile, I'm happy with the IRRS/CCE's office statement. Regards DART 8118
  20. Hi Eoin, and thanks for the post. My source for this is IRRS/CCE's Department of IE and they say, 'first commuter railway in the world, opened in December 1834'. I'd give that a little more weight than a Google search. But that's not the issue. I'm making the point that 185 years is a wonderful achievement and not a single minute of commemoration or celebration anywhere on the network. Looking forward to seeing some photos of commemoration on the model network. DART 8118
  21. Iarnród Éireann writing about it and 77 people talking about it has to be a good sign. They write, "reputed to be the world's first commuter railway". Perhaps they don't believe it either. They should be singing it from the rooftops and selling excursion tickets all day long. DART 8118
  22. 185 years of service to Irish commuters Well, here we go again. Another great Irish railway occasion worthy of commemoration and celebration and not a word to be heard anywhere. Since last year, I've continued to contact Google in the hope that they would mark the day with one of their doodles and I even prepared this simple image for them. But alas, there is nothing on my Google home page this morning. Surely, 185 years of the oldest suburban railway in the world is worthy of one of their doodles? Maybe they don't believe the fact. It's even more curious when you know that the trains pass their Dublin office block every day. For the future, 17 December will be known as Dargan Day in the miniature world that I'm working on. And, if you're of a mind to erect a poster, or other sign, on your layout celebrating 185 years of Irish railways, perhaps you'd share a photo. DART 8118 Should have taken the tablets first. Maybe tomorrow. DART 8118
  23. An interesting cameo for a layout? Something different.
  24. Well done the Irish guys and maybe soon it will be styled The Irish Quarter. Sorry to have to miss it this year. Enjoy. 8118
