Irish Railway Model Enthusiasts - facebook page
Westcorkrailway replied to Bumble_Bee's topic in General Chat
Its an idea, however the numbers it would gather would be minimal compared to facebook for example IRM themseves have 271 followers on instagram compared to 2.2k on facebook West Cork Railway Colourised Has 746 followers on instagram compared to 2.8k on facebook And despite the fact that instagram is run by facebook. There are huge differences between the two. One of the most annoying things about instagram for myself is that you cannot individually caption photos, one caption fits all!- 83 replies

The attitude of myself coming into modeling is to start with anything RTR and work from there. My first irish model was the silver fox C class. From there i put silver fox railcars on order as there the 2 big RTR west cork models (unfortunately none of IRM or MM offerings ran on the west cork except for the BnT 141s which only ran in albert quay and aren't readily abailble pre owned and the A class.....which ran all but twice!) Rolling stock is usually converted dapol wagons with flying snails slapped on the side and given a lick of paint! While silver fox offer flying snail cars 75 pounds a pop is a bit expensive. I only see myself buying one for railcar use. There is an RTR brakevan on the way if course which i look at licking my lips and those 3 wheel coaches.....they look like a decent conversion. Locos that need some converting like my other young west cork modeller include a j26 out of a j72 and a beautiful GSWR no. 34 out of a LNYR 2-4-2. 3D modeling has already given is number 90, i hope more models come abailble this way as its wayyy more accesable then conversions and kits From the kits are abailble from SSM. Like the MGMR j26 and of course the bandon tank. (Which i have but haven't touched and probably wont for years.....and i made the mistake of not buying thre gearbox or wheels ect!) However none if us have nowhere near what is required yet to do brass kits, i have only soldered wires together as of now! Can I also suggest using instagram? My West Cork Railway Colourised page uses both platforms and while Facebook one is more popular, more young people tend to use instagram. A few have tried and failed....the only way it could work is if that instagram page happens to have a stream of pictures if other layouts to post consitantly! (All credited to there respected owners of course) as groups dont really work on instagram. it would have to be a page- 83 replies

When people love a particular engine engine so much. They will want an 0 gauge one as ita the bees knees in detail and size is cool! .....and then as they have an 0 gauge engine they just start buying rolling stock and a layout just because......why not they already have a loco and hey presto....and there you have it. My theory on how 0 gauge is starting to rise- 83 replies

To be fair 00 guage is just more practical as thats the standered gauge for modeling really. Most people on this forum that would be interested in an ICR would want it 00 gauge first and formost. Not to mention that if a kid wanted to expand his layout (say he wants a 201 class as they are also still in use in the mainline) there isint irish N gauge stuff to expand- 83 replies

It would have to be marketed wayyyy differently to models have before. if this were to happen and the target demographic were to be to get new blood into irish modeling. Then unironically smyths and argos and all these sort of places would need to be also retailers. I remember the first time i realised i could buy a realistic train set that was not my thomas the tank engine layout was a virgin pendelino and the eurostar in the argos catalogue...and I ended up buying one and that was when I was about 7. The key to appealing to that audience is advertise it as high speed (yep). The fact they might recodnise the train may also help in this case.- 83 replies

Ballybréige - My imaginary Preservation Railway
Westcorkrailway replied to Bumble_Bee's topic in Irish Model Layouts
What I Would do to expand from that (good to hear that you have an A Class pre ordered) is picking up an irish mogul from bachmann years ago, re painting a jinty to NCC livery, silverfox G class as there fairly popular in preservation (in green or silver i would like to see!) of course if your into re-spraying you could make a "maebh" or respray some of the new hattons genisis coaches to make cie coaching stock. The skys the limit either this really. one of my west cork freinds turned a LNER j72 into A MGWR J26. While its not completely accurate it doed the job for him with a bit of imagination! There is a new CIE brakevan being released by JM designs which might also suit preservation stock. -

Same. I was surfing the web one day and found that somone had made a kit of the bandon tank and a model of a C class. If i hadn't found it by now i would have a fleet of british 0-6-0 s!- 83 replies

Do show how you develop the irish livery......a few of us will take notes for when we do ours!

Better late then never! The IRM A class will be in a different league altogether but we have to commend silverfox for giving us an A class option

Hornby 2021 - They Nail it again!
Westcorkrailway replied to Georgeconna's topic in British Outline Modelling
I know, twas only shoving a bachmann/MM coach onto a hattons 6 wheel chassis. @Mike 84C has a much better example of what such a coach would look like. Its an interesting one as many who wish for flying snail laminates and park royals would be more then happy to accept these into layouts. I'd buy 3 or 4 for a bandon tank! Im just observing that if these 2 companies are battling out in the 6 wheelers. And more liveries are introduced to sell more of each tooling. Maybe.....just maybe we will see a CIE option. And if not then theyll be re painted into CIE green anyway! My west cork bud has ordered some of the southern varients for this purpose. -
Hornby 2021 - They Nail it again!
Westcorkrailway replied to Georgeconna's topic in British Outline Modelling
What I will say is if 2 manufacturers are making 3 wheelers surely one will make one of these (albiet mine is a frankenstein and a pain to look at for too long, it took like 2 minutes to make anyway!) Hattons have already announced what three wheelers will be in there 3rd round....maybe if there is a forth round or god knows hornby announce this Im sure people would want to have one on the layout or weathered in a siding. And mean coaching stock is abailble for steam locos and C Class locos if any were to be produced in the future.... -
Hornby 2021 - They Nail it again!
Westcorkrailway replied to Georgeconna's topic in British Outline Modelling
Ill be honest the ethics of what hornby are doing doesn't look great. They didn't like rails using "their model" and then proceeded to copy Hattons genesis coaches. The 88 DS is looking to be a good model. But even though they have made consistently good models and I will probably still buy a few in the future. I can't agree with that kind of Craic. If i buy the generic coaches for conversion to CIE ones ill will be going Hattons -
Wow t does look like it dosent it. Ill have to ask my father where the hell it came from. I suppose it must be local. My grandfather did purchase a few sleepers of CIE from ballinhassig in 1964.

I have a big peice off of something made by cowans and sheldon. Big heavy cast circle thing about 3/4 of a meter in diameter....again no clue what it came from, despite the fact its within 50 meters of what used to be a railway station. makes for a fine heavy animal feeder!
-
4 leg pick ups, horse manure weathering, very interesting sound....and it doesn't need rails Not to mention it has a flying snail....im sold
-
Was Gort one of the last stations to retain its GSR sign?
-
I Mean This is as far as two seconds in office lense got me. Might do something like this for with a but of Sprucening of the images for my layouts in the future or of course buy SSM signs
-
Interesting strategy! Again can't be underestimated this announcement. Fair play to paddy murphy for re releasing some of these coaches and the 201s. One of the biggest complaints about irish modeling was ebay prices for existing models. 150 euro for 1 peice of rolling stock and 300-450 for some locos!
-
How do you do pre-orders for something without a price yet? Also my hope is that 226 River Suir is put out in new IE livery.....alas ill just have to wait and see
-
Yes thats true and i do think the new IE logo looks nicer on the 201s then the previous intercity decals. Great to see locos currently on the mainline being moddeled
-
Oh f*ck....i pray for the people that bought them.....chances are theyll still try sell them for 150 even when the new ones are on sale.... Its nice that the 201s were getting are the more modern variants of each livery. As has been said there is a lack of current day irish locos for people coming into the hobby. But intercity 201s are a familiar site to even those outside the irish railway circle upon showing a picture of one to my non railway freind he calls it the "high speed train" i mean at least he has the spirit

Ill look for any scraps of my communion money left over!
