Why did mk1 GSVs have air brake through piping?
josefstadt replied to murphaph's question in Questions & Answers
The vans were only vacuum braked, not dual braked. The through pipes connected the loco to the air brakes on the wagons, running along the outside of the underframe. The vans were, if I remember correctly, T.L.A. -
Noel, yes there is a generator in the weedspray van. Whether or not it is the same one as was in it originally, I'm not sure. Not sure either about heating. Hope this helps.

Came across these signals on Amazon (UK). With a little modification the would seem to be a good representation of the Union Switch & Signal signals used on the DART line and elsewhere on the CIÉ / IR / IÉ system from the early 1980s. https://www.amazon.co.uk/JTD02-Model-Railway-Block-Signals/dp/B07JNB47S8/ref=sr_1_35?dchild=1&qid=1603018892&sr=8-35&srs=18706235031

CIE locomotive livery variations 1960-1990
josefstadt replied to jhb171achill's question in Questions & Answers
At the start of 1972 there were 20 C class locomotives still, to some degree, operational. So, while some of these might have been used to shunt members of the Mk IId fleet around Inchicore works, it is most unlikely that any C class hauled these carriages out on the main line. By the time the Mk IId fleet were introduced into traffic, in December 1972, all the C class had been re-engined. The B201 class were, on the other hand, used on service trains composed of Mk IId stock one a regular basis. The attached photo by Barry Carse appeared in the February 2020 edition of the IRRS Journal (V29, No. 201) and shows B231 working the 13:30 Dublin Heuston to Cork train (7 x Mk IId) through Knocklong on 21 April 1973. -
Fulsome thanks to Paddy Murphy for dragging Irish railway modelling up to its current high standards.

1st generation Donegal diesels at Malahide
josefstadt replied to jhb171achill's topic in Irish Models
The Atkinson-Walker steam tractor (un-numbered in its Clogher Valley days) did not survive on the CVR until that line's closure in1942. It was bought by Henry Forbes for the County Donegal Railways Joint Committee in 1931 and was sent to Dundalk for rebuilding in February 1932. The locomotive was ready for trials on the Donegal's lines at the end of December 1932. Although the locomotive, numbered No. 11 and given the name 'Phoenix' by the CDRJC, did not prove to be an unqualified success, it was useful as a shunter and accumulated over 204,000 miles in service up to the end of railway operations on the CDRJC. What the CDRJC bought in 1942 were railcar No. 1 (later CDRJC No. 10) and a diesel tractor No. 2, the latter without its engine. The tractor consisted of a cab, which was similar to that on the railcar, and behind this an open wagon body. Unlike the railcar, the tractor was not articulated. The cab of the tractor was used to replace that of the railcar after the latter was damaged in a collision at Strabane. -
1st generation Donegal diesels at Malahide
josefstadt replied to jhb171achill's topic in Irish Models
To be pedantic, the shunting loco was steam-powered when on the Clogher Valley and was only fitted with a diesel engine when bought by the Donegal in 1931. -
Congrats to all on the award!

Terribly sad news. Anthony was always so friendly and helpful with everyone he dealt with. My thoughts and condolences to his family and friends at this sad time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

8118, they were empty on the return journey.

Slight correction on the timeline above JHB: 1 Jan 1945 - the DUTC and the GSR amalgamated to form CIE which was then still a private company, although it was in receipt of state-aid; 1 June 1950 - CIE and the Grand Canal amalgamated the new entity retaining the name CIE. CIE became a nationalised company at this time.

Mine arrived this morning also. Have to agree with Noel's comments above. Fantastic models, probably the best yet! Well done lads.

Train Formations - CIÉ/IR/IÉ and NIR
josefstadt replied to josefstadt's topic in What's happening on the network?
Hi K801, I haven't found any notes to give me a conclusive answer to your question. I'll keep digging and also put out feelers to see if anyone else has an answer. What era are you talking about? -
Following on from an earlier post (British Outline Modelling / Hattons train formation guides / August 2) here are some further examples of train formations on the CIÉ/IR/IÉ and NIR systems. They cover the period from the early 1970s until the early 2000s. I have included the examples from the original post - they are marked with the ¶ symbol: 21/06/1971 ??:?? Railer, the article in the IRRS Journal was 'The Transplant Story' by Barry Carse. It was in Journal 59, October 1972, pages 242-251.
-
Railer, Barry Carse did a book on the A and C classes, publisehed by Colourpoint, some time ago. Try: Irish Metro-Vick Diesels : Barry Carse : 9781898392156 - Book Depository You might be lucky. Otherwise try Amazon. There was also an article in the IRRS Journal about the re-engining programme. Again thiswas quite a few years ago. If I can turn up the exact Journal No. / date I'll post it here.

Nelson, you will have to make your way to the bus stop on O'Connell Bridge (southbound side). Then take a route 4, 7 or 7A bus to Blackrock College. The stop is almost directly across the road from the main entrance to the college and from there it is a short walk to the exhibition venue. For your return to the city centre, walk to the college's main entrance, turn left and walk along the main road for a short distance until you reach the bus stop. Again, take a 4, 7 or 7A to O'Connell Street and make your way to Connolly.

Knowing Colm and his photographic efforts, this is going to be well worth the wait!
-
Excellent looking models of these iconic Irish wagons. Another IRM success! Pack A ordered.
-
And, of course the 8100 / 8300 DARTs.

Imagine the fuss if someone decided to name a locomotive 'Sambo' in this p.c. day and age! They would probably be blacklisted!
