  1. Posted that on the old forum... it's a brilliant programme.
  2. Anyone remember 'Classic Trains' back in the '90s, narrated by John Peel? The thread triggered a memory of this song, which was featured in it...
  3. Who do I have to kill to get tickets? I'm serious...
  4. Pick of the bunch, Broithe! Johnny Cash was known to sing a few songs about trains... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabash_Railroad#Wabash_Cannon_Ball http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_Blossom_Special_(passenger_train) I'd put 'Fulsom Prison Blues' in there as well, only the train mentioned in that song isn't the main subject...
  5. I hear you have to work your way up to the big ones...
  6. Likewise, man. Hope all's OK at your end tonight. As has been said, the fair was very well organised and there was a good turnout. Would've thought the folks at Fran's new place of work would've thought him that no means no, but seeing the items in his bag proved that wasn't the case... It was nice to meet up with a few of the other familiar names from the forum, including Boskonay, Burnthebox, DartTrain, and of course, Wrenn, from whom I picked up 161 in Supertain livery... will hopefully make it up again for the February fair.
  7. Cheers, lads... I'll go with Fran's suggestion of the 46A as it'll be the handiest. Should've known to use it... used to get it to work every day!
  8. Well, I'm only going on what I was told... In other news... there are rumblings that the entire RDF is going to get the chop.
  9. What's the handiest way to get to the Stillorgan Park Hotel using public transport? Is it far from the Luas at Sandyford, or is it better to get a bus?
  10. Some Panhard AMLs still remain in service, but the Cavalry's main vehicles these days are Mowag Pirhanas and RG-32s (as seen in the video), which in fairness are serious bits of kit. The Panhards date from the 1960s, so maybe not all that surprising that some are still used, especially since they've been upgraded and re-engined down through the years... sure, look at the USAF still flying B-52s, with instances where some pilots have found themselves flying the same planes their grandads did! I think a lot of the personnel are transferring to the 6th Infantry Battalion in Athlone, Seamus. Swapping Glengarries for black berets is something they don't find ideal, but better than a long trip to the Curragh every day from the Midlands where their families have settled!
  11. I was surprised RTÉ didn't have a camera at it, Rich... re-organising the army like this is a big deal, especially since the Western Brigade was in existence since the formation of the State. It ended up being very low key, with only a few local reporters and guests present. My cousin is/was with the 4th Cav but he's in Lebanon on UN duty at the moment, so he missed the occasion... I sent him on the link so he and the other lads from unit out there can see what it was like.
  12. I was in Custume Barracks, Athlone, last Friday to witness the 4th Western Brigade's stand down parade and the disbandment of the 4th Cavalry Squadron... http://is.gd/pyJS5z
  13. "In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol - it was the worst 20 minutes of my life." - George Best
  14. "The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, "'It is done!'" Seriously, lads... watch yer backs!
  15. 2B or not 2B? That is the question... (Sorry, couldn't resist )
  16. And in the chipper afterwards when the attendant decides to put mayo on your fries...
  17. O gauge NCC Jinty: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Darstaed-Jinty-NCC-Black-Irish-Railways-MINT-O-B-ACE-HORNBY-BASSETT-LOWKE-/300827609801?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item460ab90ac9#ht_870wt_1037
  18. I don't think anything is as bad as the 29ks... would take the Jap units over them any day! Agree with you about the ICRs - best of the bunch to travel on.
  19. As already mentioned, James May's line no longer exists, so it can no longer be termed the 'longest model railway line in the world'.
  20. It's OK... we'll leave it be and just continue the conversation in the other thread.
  21. I wasn't hiding at Raheny... myself and Richie had Dave's head wrecked with cardboard models and plans strewn across his stand. You must've been in the jacks...
  22. "All you drivers are the same - all smiles and 'yer a grand lad' - but I've been stuck in this twilight zone for 50 years and now I'm really pi**ed off!"
  23. No bargains there, so! I'm gonna try and pop out for a while... if I can escape!
