What is the purpose of EGVs ?

What did they run with? Was it 141s, I know they reun with the 201s but why. I noticed recently that the Enterprise has acquired one but for a long time it seemed to run without it.

Where they purpose built or modified from old carriages?

I would be grateful for they answers to these questions as I have wondered for a long time but never asked the question.

I know I will get chapter and verse from this forum.

Thanks Lads

The reason they have been assigned to the enterprise is because the 201s used to have to generate power for the whole train, which made them fail a lot more than they should have. Now the generator van generates power for them, and the 201s are a lot more efficient now.

The EGVs provide power for the lighting, aircon, PA systems etc.

There were EGVs for the Mk2, Mk3s. The Mk3 pushpull DVTs had a small generator built into them that could power them selves and up to a max of 5 other standard Mk3.

The 201s on the DD Enterprise sets provide HEP, head end power. They run at 900rpm when idle when in this mode and that's why they are louder when on the DD stock. Around 900hp is taken from the 201 to provide power to the train leaving it with about the same power as an 071 to haul the train. HEP puts alot to strain on the 201s which is why they fail alot on the Enterprise and the locos are swapped out regularly to give them a break. With the Mk3s being withdrawn, 4 Mk3 EGVs have been modified to work with the DD stock to cut down on 201 failures. They have been in testing for 2 years and the first one entered service last September. In mid December the 3 sets had an EGV each but as of last week at least one has been removed from service. They seem to be having teething problems with them.

The Mk4 DVTs are also EGVs or DVGTs.

Yeah you're right, we were dealing with the bogey from that EGV today in York Road!

They are on the modelshopbelfast site. Silverfox makes them up. I saw one at the model rail fair in Raheny a few months back and it looked really nice with the metalic silver paint finish. Just on the pricey side and I was out to get an 071 that day so had to let it go.

If you are to kit bash one from a Mk3 a big thing is to remove the gangways and blank them over. Also they always face the same way. The electrical connections and jumper cables on one end only work with a 201 while the connections on the other are for a DD stock.

It may not be 100% true, but I noticed that, on the trains out of Heuston, the EGV was always at the Galway/Tralee/Cork end of the train.

That's so it's easier to swap one out if it fails.

Makes sense. It was always handy for me - I could leave my stuff in the van and it would be at the foot of the bridge when I got out..

Kev, if you bought a knackered long MKIII {not the shorties} from Fleabay, and got one of Des' (Studio Scale Models) etched brass sides and transfers to go on, for around €30 it would be a fairly straightforward kitbash, and a reasonably priced way to get a specialist item like the EGV. Richie

Thanks Richie and Anthony. Good suggestion but at the moment I am going to kit bash MKIII s and see how I get on with the resprays. If I can master that then I might try an EVG

Enjoy it Kevin, and remember if you decide to get the SSM EGV, it comes with all the bits.

Colour photo instructions, transfers, plastic fibre for the exhaust pipes, roof detailing, door steps, glazing, wiring, and the sides are precurved for you

Thanks Weshty. This was not a road I had intended to go down but now find myself being sucked in by the contents of this forum. There are a lot of Purists on this forum and I am not one but find myself being drawn into it. Not a bad thing but I want to walk before I can run and have kit bashed a few old MK III coaches to respray and am tentively crawling along expecting to make mistakes and when completed find that there are things I could have done better, but sure that is life. I have suprised myself at "Having a Go". I am finding respraying is an art. I did pass your stand at Cultra in November should have picked your brains there but alas will battle on. Good luck Kevin

Always remember that the purists on here were beginners once too and make plenty of mistakes along the way. Having a go is the most important part, and you'll learn from any mistakes you make and love the results when something goes right! Fair play for having a go!

V. Tasty! Nice clean lines there and the colour looks good.

Don't underestimate "having a go"

I started out in the hobby just over 7 years ago this month.

Couldn't get the transfer packs i wanted so "had a go" at designing my own

Didn't want to spend €550 on a 15 rake of MIR bubbles (€1.50 to the £ at the time), so "had a go" at designing my own etches and used Kinder eggs.

Got an S Class from Paul Greene and loved it so much that when I heard SSM was for sale, said "what the hell" and bought it from him.

Go for it horse. ;-)

That is some of the most sensible and accurate advice you could have given Fran. You learn something new every day and there are 365 days in a year so we are all still learning no matter how long we have been active modellers.

That's a great effort Kev, I bet your pleased with the results so far. There's only so much that people can teach you, the rest is trial and error and that's how you develope your own technique.

That's a nice story Des and is interesting from a modellers point of view. I think we will have to organize an interview for the group as you supply so many items to the group members. I'd certainly like to hear more.
