Darius43 Posted August 11 Author Posted August 11 Exterior painted and brickwork panels applied (Scalescenes). Cheers Darius 10 2
jhb171achill Posted August 11 Posted August 11 That cabin was a serious height, like the old one at Portarlington. Waterford likewise; was up all three back in the day, gingerly, as I do NOT have a good head for heights! 1 1
Patrick Davey Posted August 12 Posted August 12 An impressively precise approach to the glazing, how do you place the masking tape pieces with such precision Darius? This is a cracking build! 1 1

This is a cracking build! Hi Patrick, I stick a large piece of tape on the clear sheet and cut the glazing bars out with a sharp knife, leaving the tape masks over each pane behind. Cheers Darius Hi @Darius43. I use the same method for glazing, but use perspex with "tape" already covering the surface. Cut and paint then. Have to hand it to you though, I am nowhere as precise as you. Need a sharper knife methinks (and a lot more patience). Yours look great. 1 1
David Holman Posted August 14 Posted August 14 Self adhesive address labels do the same thing, though require patience to cut out, leaving the glazing bars behind. 1

Darius43 Posted September 13 Author Posted September 13 (edited) Baseboards arrived from Model Railway Solutions yesterday. Assembly commenced. This is the first and largest of the six modules that will make up the layout. Cheers Darius Edited September 13 by Darius43 10
Darius43 Posted September 13 Author Posted September 13 Legs fitted and first module in place. Cheers Darius 10 2
Darius43 Posted September 14 Author Posted September 14 Two more modules assembled and installed. Cheers Darius 13
Mol_PMB Posted September 14 Posted September 14 That's looking great. It's a tight fit in the room - but good use of space as long as you can still get to those shelves somehow! I look forward to seeing this develop. 1
Darius43 Posted September 15 Author Posted September 15 Alas baseboards construction has stopped as the framing parts for two of the modules were not supplied. I have asked for them to be shipped ASAP. The shop (Model Railway Solutions) is closed today but I will call them tomorrow. Very frustrating. Cheers Darius 1 1 1
Mol_PMB Posted September 15 Posted September 15 Frustrating indeed. I normally build my own boards but to give me a running start for my mini Irish layout I have ordered some laser-cut baseboard kits. Hopefully they will arrive complete, but there’s still the lead time of 6+ weeks to deal with. I hope your missing parts arrive soon as I’m looking forward to seeing this develop. 1
Darius43 Posted September 16 Author Posted September 16 (edited) Whilst waiting for the missing baseboard parts, I decided to pre-paint the track - Peco Code 75. Cheers Darius Edited September 16 by Darius43 9
Darius43 Posted September 20 Author Posted September 20 Radio silence on the missing parts so I ordered some cut to order 9mm plywood from another supplier and they arrived on Thursday. Baseboard assembly completed today. Track laying starts tomorrow. Cheers Darius 9
Darius43 Posted September 22 Author Posted September 22 Track laying commenced. Point control by wire in tube. Cheers Darius 9 2
Patrick Davey Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Superb. The attention to detail is really on a new level when the catch points operate, I have never seen that before! 1 1
Patrick Davey Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Quick question @Darius43 - why do the point control wires include a loop?
Darius43 Posted September 22 Author Posted September 22 4 minutes ago, Patrick Davey said: Quick question @Darius43 - why do the point control wires include a loop? Hi Patrick, It’s called an “omega loop” and prevents the pull or push of the wire from breaking the point by absorbing excess movement. Cheers Darius 1 1 6
Darius43 Posted September 23 Author Posted September 23 (edited) More wire in tube turnout controls added. Cheers Darius Edited September 23 by Darius43 7 1
Tullygrainey Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Always tricky going round corners. That arrangement works well. 1 1
Galteemore Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Great stuff Darius. Are you switching frogs and if so, how? I used w-i-t on a layout once and used separate rockers, but I know there are various ways… 1
Darius43 Posted September 24 Author Posted September 24 (edited) Track laying continues. Cheers Darius Edited September 24 by Darius43 9 1
Darius43 Posted September 26 Author Posted September 26 Double track circuit completed. o Cheers Darius 12
Flying Snail Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Looking good! How will you manage access to the middle of the room - crawl under the viaduct, or will it be removable?
