Difference: CIE Original VS CIE Supertrain liveries?

Hello,

I'm looking at buying an 071 class either MM0088 (CIE original) vs. MM0086 (CIE Supertrain). I cannot determine what the difference is between these liveries with CIE "broken wheel" logos. Maybe Supertrain is a little deeper orange:confused:? My only frame of reference right now is having some baby GMs in "Supertrain" livery 161sa & 182.

Can anyone offer an explanation or a little background on this if possible.

The 071s were delivered in a slightly darker richer shade of orange to that used for other locos and coaches. They were more intensively used than other classes and tended to be look a lot darker as they were usually covered in road grim.

But were there two different versions? CIE 'Original" and then Supertrain? Murphy Models MM0086 (086SA) definitely looks a little richer than MM0088 on (say) the Hattons site(if you can judge anything by these)

It's the same class of loco; the difference is that the 'original' features the as-delivered colour scheme, which as Mayner says, had the wrong shade of orange, plus an all-white 'broken wheel' CIÉ logo.

 

CIÉ gradually fixed these issues after the 071s entered service and this is what Murphy's 'Supertrain' version represents.

As has been said the as delivered locos were in a shade of orange that had a brown hue to the over all color scheme. The as delivered locos were also fitted with Sinclair Antennas (the black antenna behind the cab at the mechanical end of the model) but lost these later. The NIR 111 class locos still carry Sinclair Antennas. MM really went all out on detail for these models and the later liveried models have yaw dampers on the bogies.

The all-white CIE logo on the as-delivered 071's was also a different size. The "roundel" was of a larger diameter, and the letters were marginally bigger too.

Thanks for your replies. I see it now. Appreciate the history on how this occurred. Anyone know how long the repaint took? i.e. what proportion of their lives was spent in each livery (orange/black) before they got the black/silver of course?

I also a similar question about NIR 112/113. Are there any difference between these locos other than number/name? They both seem to be current livery , I think (except one is a Ltd Ed. and more expensive)

112 got new LED marker lights fitted while it was on long term loan to IE and got replacement cab windows from a scrapped 141 and these are featured on the model. 111 and 113 still have the as delivered marker lights to this day while all of IE's 071s and other locos got LED marker lights.

Another minor difference in the two CIE liveries is that the 'as delivered' livery had the headlight surrounds painted in the same shade of orange as the rest of the loco. Generally, CIE painted the headlight surrounds white on their locos, and the 071's got white surrounds when they were repainted.
