Released to traffic last week after an absence of nearly four years out of service-and at one stage thought to be one of the first 071s that was about to be scrapped,

Here we see a refurbished 0117087 coupled to the IWT liner in Ballina freight yard.

Great photo Noel. Was the bodywork bad on her Noel or was there other issues with it.

When I seen it in Inchicore a few years ago it was gutted,I'll dig out the photos I took of her for you,

I honestly thought she would never run again,

I have very fond memories of her working Ballina branch trains 10 years or so ago-it was a regular performer on the branch set along with 079.

Which ones are in traffic in slate grey now, 071, 077 , 087 & 080?

071,077,078,084,085,087 and 088 are in traffic-with 076 awaiting release to traffic, 080 has nearly finished its bodywork overhaul-and will probably be in the paint shop over the next few weeks.

great pic Noel. any reason why she has a different right buffer....or is it a mirage brought on by my over indulgence in Guinness last night?

There is a few 071s going around like that. I think they just replace them with whatever they have a the time. 082 had a new one fitted about 2 years ago and it was in oxide red so it stood out like 087's.

The bogies don't look fully brand new. When 206 was shown in the paint shop recently you could see 087 behind it with it's bogies removed, whatever the hold up was getting 087 back into traffic seems bogie related anyway.

Here is 087 at Westport station earlier today-it's first visit in five years.

087 has been uncoupled from the timber train and is slowly making its way back to the short siding at the station.

I though the timber trains had ceased based on posts/pics that I had seen on various sites, Noel. Although, maybe previously they came from Sligo?

Noel, where does the timber train stable and get loaded at Westport? I've never seen pics of a freight yard there or anything, just the station!

Have to say I much rather the 071s in the grey livery than the black and silver freight livery, think it was the yellow face that ruined it. Also whoever is putting on number stickers at Inchicore lately is all over the shop with all the different styles, fonts and spacing.

When 080 is released from Inchicore, it will have the fourth style of grey livery - no numbers, original big numbers, spaced out big numbers and now more rounded spaced out numbers!

When 080 gets out, heck 076 still hasn't made it out after almost a year.

You have the likes of 071, 077, 084 and 088 that you can't tell from any reasonable distance head on. 088 does have the 8 8 spaced far apart though. What the did with 206 is how 071s should have been with just one small EVN each side.

Sligo timbers ceased in December 2008,

Thankfully Westport and Ballina timbers still operate with two laden trains ex Westport and one ex Ballina per week for the moment.

I never liked the silver, black and yellow either. Though someone posted a pic of a 141 on a layout in that style and it looked surprisingly well, in my humble opinion.....

The grey is all tight. Certainly not hugely colourful, but nor is it garish. We were accustomed to plain grey on steamers for almost half a century, after all, and nobody batted an eyelid......
