kevo Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 HiĀ all just sentĀ Ā in a few pics of my small boxfile layoutĀ . it will run a few different types of rolling stockĀ Ā inc gypsumĀ and fertiliserĀ and poss cementĀ hope you like it . work still in progressĀ Ā . 15 2
Galteemore Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 Very nice indeed. Shows whatās possible in a small spaceĀ 1
popeye Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 Very nice, it has so much realism. I would be nice to see it expanded. 1
kevo Posted May 2, 2021 Author Posted May 2, 2021 thanks popeyeĀ glad you like itĀ . must admitĀ it could have done with beingĀ a tad or to longerĀ but it was just to see what can be done in a boxfile . it has a two trackĀ Ā traverser so the whole layout can work withĀ two locos and roughly 4-5 wagonsĀ . one loco brings train inĀ uncouplesĀ Ā and runs back outĀ .then i bring anotherĀ loco in to shunt .Ā belive it or not a shut around can last for a good 10 -15 mins beforeĀ Ā reverse ingĀ the wholeĀ processĀ . thats is not include ingĀ when things get in a jam and has to be un tangledĀ . at the momentĀ . i only have two 141 classĀ Ā locos but hope to add a 121 in a weeks time . fingers crossedĀ 3
David Holman Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 (edited) Excellent work - well done you. There is probably more fun in building modules like this than actually operating them, but as your pictures show, they are great for posing and photographing models. Plus of course, one delvelops new skills in the process and the project gets going pretty quickly too. Ā Edited May 2, 2021 by David Holman spelling
kevo Posted May 2, 2021 Author Posted May 2, 2021 thanks DavidĀ yes thats trueĀ as i tend to build only small layouts there is more fun in the build sideĀ allsoĀ things get finished much quickerĀ . as my iterestĀ in railways covers stadard gauge subjects and narrow gaugeĀ and american to i can never justifieĀ oneĀ Ā large layoutĀ . as i am nearly allways thinking of my next project before one subject is finishedĀ 1
murphaph Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 Very impressed with this. I love the grungy 161 the most. Any chance of weathering up the ballast wagons too? 1
kevo Posted May 2, 2021 Author Posted May 2, 2021 yes them wagons do need some weather ingĀ Ā theyĀ stick out a bitĀ compared toĀ the rather caked up 161Ā i hold Ā my.handsĀ up the hoppers Ā they only arrivedĀ this friday just goneĀ so its in the pipe line . 2
kevo Posted May 3, 2021 Author Posted May 3, 2021 hi all as its hang on toĀ your hat weather where i am this bank holl . thought i would knuckelĀ down to some bits on the boxfile . one bit that neededĀ finishing off was part of the duct work from the warehouseĀ i wanted to achive a blister peeling paint lookĀ . there are lots of ways to achive this look . one methordĀ thats works for meĀ is the hair spray and salt techĀ hope thease pics show how i did itĀ with the base coat of rust allreadyĀ on next stage was use a can of cheap hair spray blow over what ever your subject is a few quick coats is enough then just sprinkle some table salt onĀ air brush your topĀ coat onĀ leave to dry for 10 minsĀ then with a stiff paint brushĀ and waterĀ brush the saltĀ and you should be left with a nice rusty pealing lookĀ Ā hope this is of useĀ Ā 8 2 1
kevo Posted May 3, 2021 Author Posted May 3, 2021 thanks bandonĀ its a really easy way and quite funĀ to doĀ it still needsĀ a dusting over with some weather ingĀ powders to finish offĀ
kevo Posted May 4, 2021 Author Posted May 4, 2021 now the ducting and safety ladder our gluedĀ back in place and blend back in .next job will be to tackelĀ the stone walling on the end wharehouseĀ i will problyĀ clad this in corrougatedĀ sheeting so as to give it a more neutral look so it dus not tie the layout to any paticular region .Ā 6 1
Galteemore Posted May 4, 2021 Posted May 4, 2021 Thatās looking really effective. Shades of New Ross c 1980 1
kevo Posted May 4, 2021 Author Posted May 4, 2021 Thanks GalteemoreĀ my interest in irish railways has only been basicly a year or soĀ . so ime still finding my way around . i have just looked up new ross and found a few pics .Ā . brilliantĀ that is right up my streetĀ cement and fertiliserĀ over grown sindings etc and in the 1980 thanks again for that .Ā justĀ taken a end on view from under the bridgeĀ 5 1
kevo Posted May 5, 2021 Author Posted May 5, 2021 A beforeĀ with the stone wallingĀ and after with the corrogatedĀ claddingĀ need ssome blending in with paintĀ to cover up the jointĀ 9
kevo Posted May 5, 2021 Author Posted May 5, 2021 Thanks Galteemore quite a few of my other layouts haveĀ eneded up with concreteĀ appronsĀ i use a washĀ of greys and whiteĀ and then use weather ing powdersĀ aii rubbed inĀ till ime happy with the lookĀ 2
kevo Posted May 5, 2021 Author Posted May 5, 2021 i found thease two picsĀ that just show some more concrete hardĀ standing on myĀ old cement layout , i guess one reason i did this was it saved on groud coverĀ . also seenĀ here my old c class locoĀ sadlyĀ Ā i no longerĀ have , 7 1
David Holman Posted May 6, 2021 Posted May 6, 2021 Excellent ground cover. Presume you used a static grass machine to create the weeds growing through old sleepers and rubbish? Ā Likewise, how do you create the concrete hard standing? Colour and texture look just right.
Galteemore Posted May 6, 2021 Posted May 6, 2021 That is just terrific. Small incidentals like the overhead wiring just add so much here.Ā
MikeO Posted May 6, 2021 Posted May 6, 2021 (edited) A great little layout. The weathering techniqueĀ is very effective and looks simple to achieve.Ā Edited May 6, 2021 by MikeO
kevo Posted May 6, 2021 Author Posted May 6, 2021 Tanks all for your kindĀ commentsĀ Hi David yes i 1st usedĀ some stick on grass tuffs of differentĀ bllendsĀ then i used a cheapĀ staticĀ grass applicatorĀ looks a bit like one of them old tea strainersĀ and covered the grass tuffsĀ with different mixes of static grass fibers till it got that really over grown lookĀ , the concrete hard standard ingĀ is justĀ white plasticĀ cardĀ cut to shape in and around the trackĀ then blown over with grey primerĀ then i just used railmatchĀ concrete acrylicĀ paint in a wash and kept addingĀ different greys whites etc . when dry then i use cheap artis chalksĀ rubbed on with my finger tillĀ it looks ok . 2 1
kevo Posted May 6, 2021 Author Posted May 6, 2021 hope thease two pics give a better view of the hard standingĀ . i enjoyedĀ building this layout a few years agoĀ it was not very bigĀ possibley only 4 ft long the run off had a 3 track taverserĀ another shunting type layout really , i sold it on to fund other projectsĀ so its out there someĀ whereĀ i hope still . last pic gives a over all view of the whole thing . 5 2
Galteemore Posted May 6, 2021 Posted May 6, 2021 This is a little gem. Lots of good tips like the curved backscene.
David Holman Posted May 6, 2021 Posted May 6, 2021 Object lessons for us all, add in Ken's similar project and there is much inspiration in these small projects.
kevo Posted May 12, 2021 Author Posted May 12, 2021 hi to all i have managed to track downĀ a couple of 2nd handĀ IMR cement bubblesĀ just 2 add a bit of a change and to add to my lack of irish rolling stock . i doint know whats happened to IMR they doint seem to be around any moreĀ i did haveĀ a break vanĀ and some cie boxĀ vans from them a few years a go and would and would like to replace them as they all got sold on when i went back to narrow gauge moddeling . any way hope you like the new pics and my other 141 no 177 shuntting them around . allso i have startted adding a few bits of grass tuffs and over the next few evenings will add more weeds and grass growing in the cracks in the hard standing .Ā 8 2
DJ Dangerous Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 Stunning layout, so well built, and that little forklift does a great job at catching the eye. Ā
kevo Posted May 13, 2021 Author Posted May 13, 2021 Thanks daveĀ glad u like it its not far off completeĀ now . butĀ i have a bit more tweekingĀ with weeds etc and those cement come fertilizerĀ bags on the pallet stack need some weather ingĀ and the last bit will be the front board ing to go on so it will look like a fish tank . after this project i have anotherĀ small layout thatĀ i started but never finished it was a BR scottish region small stationĀ Ā but will now get a irish theameĀ make over . 1
kevo Posted May 13, 2021 Author Posted May 13, 2021 I know its divertingĀ away from my currantĀ project but ive putt in a few pics of how far i got with itĀ . things like the red phone box will have to be changed etcĀ 5 3
Galteemore Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 It just gets better and better ! Some classic theatre design principles here. Very nicely observed all round.
JasonB Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 22 minutes ago, kevo said: Impressive work all round. The colours used on the stone look the business.Ā Ā
kevo Posted May 13, 2021 Author Posted May 13, 2021 Thanks guysĀ for the commentsĀ . i think i may have to get this layoutĀ down of rhe top of my bookcaseĀ at the weekend and blow of the dust for a running sessionĀ Ā
David Holman Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 Jason is right, there is a subtlety to your palette which makes everything look so natural. It is so easy to over do things, but these dioramas look just right.
