Indeed, a sad loss for all that knew him. He has left the wider railway enthusiast community an enduring legacy for which we must be grateful. May he Rest in Peace.
  6. Keyboards at dawn?
  7. Which of course goes to prove that there is no need for a rail freight container service between Waterford and Dublin, even if only on an occasional basis!
  8. So long as it is OO scale, not HO, HO, HO! Happy New Year to all:trains:.
  9. Sorry 'bout that. I'll try again Aerial view from the Rosslare end of the train. The digger which hit the bridge can be seen to the left of the third coach from the rear of the train (2424). In front of 2424 are 2150 and 1556 (at an angle to the right) then the remains of 2585, 1922 and 2154 which were totally destroyed. Locomotive B132 lies partly covered by the wreckage to the left of the track. Aerial view from the eastern side of the line at the Dublin end of the train. 1556 is at the left-hand side of the image, while the upturned B132 can be seen just above the jib of the road crane. The scale of the destruction of the three 'wooden bodied' coaches can be judged in this view. B132 lies upturned at the foot of the small embankment partly buried by wreckage. At the top are 1556, 2150 and 2424. The shattered remains of 2585, 1922 and 2154 with the relatively intact 1556 at the top. The damage to the bridge caused by the digger (seen in the background) and the ensuing crash can be seen in this view from the eastern side of the line. The two coaches are 2424, on the left, and 2150. The five people who died were all in the latter. It will be seen that the rear two compartments and vestibule of 2150 were completely destroyed when the coach was hit by the structurally sounder Park Royal vehicle.
  10. I remember that day well. I was working in Bray station at the time and word came very quickly through the signal cabins that the disaster had happened. After finishing my shift I went down to Clough to view the scene. Unlike today the site wasn't closed off and anyone who wanted to could wander around. No health & safety rubbish - just take care of yourself and don't get in the way! The train (as reported in the Feb 1976 IRRS Journal) was composed of B132 + 2585, 1922, 2154, 1556, 2150, 2424, 3192, 2570. Sadly, five persons died in the disaster - four members of the public and one CIÉ staff member. A further 43 persons received injuries of varying severity. There were a total of 94 passengers on the train. Some more photos of the aftermath (aerial shots from the Irish Press): Aerial view from the Rosslare end of the train. 11. JHB, seating in the Dining Cars will be for standard class passengers. Whether it will be reserved for those wishing to eat and what level of catering will be offered is not clear yet. One down side is that, due to the high level windows, views will be somewhat restricted. The Wanderer featured a photo study of the first refurbished set on 16.11.2015, including this photo of the seating area in 9402:
  12. Love the quote from Chet Huber GMLG: '... a tremendous locomotive for Irish Rail to use over the next 30 years .... to pull passengers and to pull freight ...'. Didn't quite work out like that for a large proportion of the fleet, including 201 itself!
  13. There are 365 days to go till Christmas. I hope you don't expect us to be sober for them all !!!!
  14. How about: 1. Uncouple from coaches and move locomotive towards Dromod stopping clear of points. 2. Run back through loop to the Mostrim end of station and stop clear of points. 3. Move forward into the gantry road and couple up to liner. 4. Pull liner out of yard to the Mostrim end of station and stop clear of points. 5. Push liner back into the loop. 6. Uncouple from liner and run to the Mostrim end of station and stop clear of points. 7. Move forward into the main platform road and couple to the coaches. 8. 15. Christmas greetings to one and all.
  16. And many happy returns!!!!
  17. They are 'Guard Rails'.
  18. That's the situation prior to the 1997 work. As part of the re-modelling the start of the interlaced track was replaced by a turnout and the rails of the former Up line across the viaduct were removed. Also, the facing crossover (closer to the camera) was removed.
  19. The interlaced track across the Boyne Viaduct was taken out of use on the night of the 2nd/3rd March 1997, following the passing of the 20:15 Dublin-Belfast service.
  20. Close enough to the mince pies and the Irish coffee i'd say!
  21. Could it be jose Mourinho trying to raise some cash to buy a few new players?!
  22. Reminds me that someone once called Llantrisant the hole with the mint!
  23. Around the Athloine area lawns are swimming pools!
