1. You're a genious, josefstadt, as I told you earlier this evening in the IRRS!
2. ".....I've a notion that one of these was painted black instead of grey in very late days. I'll investigate which one (or if I'm even right on that one!)....." I investigated the above, which I posted the other day - on perusal, I'm probably wrong, as the picture is strong in contrast. This often made grey locos look black, especially when combined with the sheen of oily rags polishing! I'd stick with grey for accuracy.
3. The possibility of no two layouts having the same stuff.... interesting!
4. A good few years now, Junctionmad - maybe 10.....
5. The "chaos" was indeed short lived, as trains stopped everywhere due to poor fuel, but as you say it was short lived. However, it took full frequency of services a good while more to get back to normal, even though reliability improved.
6. GSWR carriage key now sold
7. Original copy of Sprink's authoritative history of the SLNCR. Original copy in good condition. €15 plus postage. Excellent TRACK DIAGRAMS included. Very useful for modeller.
8. Do you still write cheques? Here's an NIR cheque book cover from about 1985, free except for postage cost. IE 2009 timetable, free except for postage costs. Mid 1940s Bus Etiquette booklet, published by the Dublin United Tramways Company. Quirky, amusing! €5 plus postage.
9. 1946 CIE public timetable - only the new company's second year. €10 plus postage
10. Moderator: I seem to have 2 threads up on this - can you amalgamate?
11. I love the 4.4.2T
12. London Transport tube window sticker, believed to be 1960s. The coin isn't included; it's to show size!
13. Hmmm. It only put up a few of the illustrations I posted.....
14. Motion carried. I'll set some up in the next few days when I get time.
15. DUTC timetable. €15 plus post.
16. A few snippets from the above outline diagram book. These include ex-W & L stock, and the RPSI's twelve-wheeler, No.861. It's interesting to note the internal layout of many of these vehicles, including six wheelers with internal (but not through) side corridors, and other non-corridor stock with access to toilets from central compartments only. No. 1097, currently on the DCDR, is among this lot too. 18. Train services were reduced to one a day on main routes only. Coal was so scarce that a mix of tar pitch and turf and coal dust was used as fuel at times. This clinkered up and caused frequent stops to raise steam. A journey to Cork could take eight or nine hours. Chaos ruled until supplies returned to normal. I have a timetable somewhere for that period. Must fish it out....
19. Didn't know they got to Clifden of Shillelagh, Mayner! ......adds to their appeal...... As I said, I thought a J26 would be a great one the DCDR had it survived. The GNR No. 93 in Cultra would do just as well, and had "Argadeen" have survived.....
20. Correct! And he did a bit of footplate travel too...
21. Here's an interesting "wander" from the archival catacombs....
22. The lining on a scale model UTA loco seems to be quite hard - it generally appears very overscale on models... Livery detail - buffer beam numbers were (almost uniquely on an Irish railway) completely plain straw colour - no shading or lining at all, like modern computer print - when in initial and short lived NCC livery (maroon lining only). The "N C C" on the sides was likewise. The UTA used conventional shaded numerals. I've seen models with the pre-1963 UTA "red hand roundel" but I don't think I've ever seen the 1963-7 crest on any model. This would look well but would need to be scaled down as it was quite small - I think, from memory about a scale 2.5 - 3mm in height. The UTA painted the main connecting rod red, again I think unique in Ireland.
23. Just saw photos tonight of J26's shunting Amiens St station about 1961 also.... which means probably Westland Row / Grand Canal St saw them too in latter days.
