  1. Haven't selected a DCC controller yet but I think you'll have a lot of support for those choices. That a perfect example of what I mean about your level of interest or committment to your hobby; some of the time devoted to funding it from a separate pot. Well done you!
  2. It's true that the hobby is not cheap. However the larger collections have probably been built up over very many years and the cost per year for the enjoyment that is recieved by the modeller and by others viewing the layout is also very considerable. Many other ways to spend your money (less wisely, in MY opinion, it's just an opinion) I have not idea how much a pach of cigarettes is but I'm going to guestimate 5euro just for arguments sake, that almost Eur2,000 a year or nearly Eur18,000 over a decade. very nice layout acquired for that amount and unlikely to fall into ill health due to being run over by any model under G scale. Diving, is equipment intensive, with consumables, boats, Nitrox, location etc.. I think trains & layouts are acquired over time depending on individual resources and level of interest, and other than causing the occasional fracas or debate on here, I think you could do much 'worse' EDIT: As for wives, I'm pretty sure they know exactly how much most of the modellers spend and choose to turn a blind eye to it, to a greater or lesser extent. The cost of keeping you out of her kitchen, PRICELESS! (for everything else, there's Mastercard)
  3. it's basically square, 10ft per side times 4?
  4. I think 5236 and 5229 were the only orange roofed coaches. Is there another run intended or what? I didn't understand why there were not enough individual numbers to make a decent rake?
  5. That makes sense. Thanks to both of you for the clarification THat's why I said 'bus' in refereence to the NIR bus and NIR-owned 201 class locomotives. I know what a tram is. However this is a large (electrically) motorized mass transit vehicle on a very fixed route for payment, is it not? So no need to get irate at those of us not so endeared to the Luas, please Ref. Oxford Dictionary (English) Bus 1 A large motor vehicle carrying passengers by road, especially one serving the public on a fixed route and for a fare: 2 Computing ...... etc
  6. I have little interest in the Luas or how they're numbered but, as this is 4006, does that mean that the Mk IV DVT needs an '8' or something put in front of it to distinguish it from the 'bus' in the photo?
  7. That makes a lot of sense, Kieran I'm sure it will be useful to more than me! Looks like the point blades need to be centred to do, so presumably need to disconnect any point motor arm to prevent injury to it
  8. Thanks very much both of you. Homework to be done tonight, I think
  9. Any info on this one, Dave? Apart from being the wrong scale, is it protoypical? Paint job seems to be pretty basic, maybe ok for then? Is it split from a set?
  10. Liked that very much. Is that a TPO followed by an EGV (or some sort of TPO sorting coach) at 4:24?
  11. That's a novel Guinness wagon (for me, at least). Is it prototypical?........(that's probably a stupid question)
  12. I think it looks right at home there, squeezed in or not and accross from the limestone station and that awesome model by GD. Love this scene, Kieran. Good job, Kieran. That'll do nicely.
  13. Would someone identify the last three coaches in NIR livery on the first video at 1:11 please? Sorry, can't quite make it out
  14. Well done, IT. I knew someone had used one from scratch but had forgotten who. Seems to run very well!

  16. I know the CD motor has been suggested before. It doesn't seem very expensive it if fits in and saves some work on figuring out the retrofit from scratch. These must be secondhand motors I suspect. Wonder how long they would last. Possibly a fair while as CD/DVD drive get a fair amount of spinning relative to being on a loco unless you're running it all day long. Free shipping for most of you too! Anybody used one...?
  17. No, I understood that. What you were saying is correct but I guess I just realized that each MK III would normally accommodate maybe 50 passengers per coach and here is a rake of 8 or nine coaches with 40 plus a few extra staff!
  18. Interesting, maybe the Belmond brochure is not to be believed? An artist's (or CGI's) impression....... I'd want to get everything that was advertized at that price! I guess the tare weight might but there wouldn't be much passenger weight with 40 guests aboard
  19. Kieran, if you have any left to do could you upload a few shots of the refined technique. With luck, it might become a sticky. Are your points fixed to the baseboard by the PVA glue and how do you get them out with joiners and everything? Will another fit back in or you have to reballast everything?
  20. If they top and tail it, wouldn't that screw up the view from those nice observation coaches? Wonder if the observation cars are at both ends?
  21. Not that easy in the middle of my workday, Richie. You've a better chance of watching Jimmy Kimmel live. I knew Waterford was gone at least in its original form, Tom. It's damn expensive to buy over here (we're all wealthy Yanks from the Belmond thread:rolleyes:) Very few iconic Irish companies left. I guess the Budweiser Clydesdales will be on Guiness next:((
  22. Agreed. Can they use HEP in an emergency? Is any produced at Waterford anymore. I thought that after it went into receivership that most of the crystal is now made in Germany, Slovenia, Czech Rep etc. What happened to the original factory . It wasn't sold?
