  1. Ok I am basing this on a guess the 201s are more powerful than the mk4 DVTs.I get that maintenance would be large but why on earth don't they have more 201s on the main line? It seems to be the most idiotic thing to leave them to rot after they cost I don't know how much but I can take a guess it had a lot of zeros! At least all the money wouldn't be going to waste. they say there is not enough work for them but their are plenty of mk4 DVTs and 22ks running On the mainline. I think that a smaller version of the 201s maybe about the size of a 141 would have been a better idea than those massive machines.
  2. Food on planes and trains are certainly a thing of the past I don't particularly hate the food but me being a tea lover was horrified by its taste. I find the 22ks as a realible service,I have never experienced spainish heat inside however maybe a tiny bit more leg room (only a few inches!) would hardly go to waist. I am not a regular commuter but I think the 26ks have a good enough interior but wil be needing a bit of an overhaul within a few years. I have rarely been on mk4s so I can't say much about them. All I can really say is I like their liveries!
  3. Also I think Irish rail could advertise a bit better. Two people asleep in uncomfortable looking seats and having an imaginary conversation doesn't make me want to board a train. I never said golden age but it was a time when there were fairly new locos and they could still just by the skin on their teeth compete with road transport up until the late 80s when the main roads were a full working service. Certainly their were a lot that could be improved but a lot still has to be done. That's all for now,
  4. And yet on the other side of the channel they have trains doing 100 average regularly? I get the Irish system is not built for that but it just seems daft that we have not been brought up to speed the way we should have. Yes Noel as you said we could have got a bit more from the mk3s and I think an entire DMU fleet idea(which seems to be what's happening ) is daft. Also Irish rail could still have a large freight service if they were willing to keep to a large schedule. CIEs best few years were the 80s and 90s good passenger and freight services and a seemingly modern look on things.
  5. I think Irish rail have sort of rushed this into service. Yes I think it is a good idea and have thought it through but only in the short term,to get it into service ASAP but have not thought about comfort. If they had left it another year and saved up so they would have enough to slightly modify the mk4s to meet high standards. Non stop expresses are usually the premier route with comfort reliability and a sense of safety, which I think Irish rail could do if they really wanted to. Also 2hrs 15? Weren't the 800s recorded doing that? Surely even with the speed restrictions we could bring it down to 2hrs? Although I am not sure as I am not a civil engineer
  6. Hi Jim welcome to the forum.you sound like someone I know also called Jim. I can't really help you out with your question but I will give it a shot. Wouldn't it be logical to refuel and service the loco before washing as it may get oil etc on it although knowing CIE they are not known for doing stuff the way everyone else does. I'm probably wrong but someone will tell you. There are a good few boffins in this forum
  7. Aye Garfield, they be like sirens, luring ya up to the glass case till you can't move from it until you pay up!
  8. Could you show some pics of this amazing cleaning machine?
  9. Shipping seems to have increased around cork in the last few years but it's shipping facilities aren't great for larger ships so there would be a lot of development needed before even thinking about a container port.If they were going to build a container terminal maybe a artificial terminal and port might be an option although that would be pretty far down CIE and cork city councils list of "to do's" and would only be necessary if it was a large project.
  10. Hi Kev think I get what your saying. Indeed if this thread does lose interest for only a few weeks it may be hard to find. I think we should get Bosko, Garfield or Warbonnet on that "standardized format" as I am a relatively new member
  11. Hi guys this is a thread where we put a bit of info on different classes of steam locos ( and possibly certain locos that are special in some way or are one of a kind eg the turf burner CC1). Don't worry the rest of yez I will get to a diesel thread shortly. 800 class 4-6-0 Maedb Macha Tailte 6,7 driving wheels 3,0 leading wheels 34,799 tractive effort Largest steam locomotives ever to run in Ireland
  12. How did Hornby get away with that!
  13. Alright lads disassembling no.800. She came out of the situation without any real damage done. Garfield the running plate problem seems to be a bit better now and I think the problem was that the locos cab and buffer plate were sitting while the running plate(which would be about a cm above) would bow from the weight the boiler.the smoke box was not sitting correctly on its saddles so solder was put in to compensate. However this looked unsightly. The smokebox was re rolled and re attached to the saddles and sits on them correctly now.Glenderg the bit hanging out could have been a nut and bolt that have since been removed. The excess solder has been filed and sanded off and the resin cast has been properly fitted to the firebox and smokebox. I have decided to finish her myself. If everything works like it is on its current track i might be finished by the end of summer. Still having an awful time with pick ups. Doesn't seem to be much on rm web about them. Anyway have a new magnifying glass lamp thing which is extremely useful.
  14. Thanks for the pics;) Forgive me for asking but I know little about module layouts. If you wanted could you make your layout bigger with more modules? The locos look very good as well as the rolling stock,You seem to have plenty!
  15. Your layout is well detailed. Even petrol pumps in the village! Could you post more pics of 800 and the Jeep?
  16. 3 201s in the station! I Think you should be head of CIE!
  17. Like your little layout.Having it modular in N gauge sounds a bit frustrating but would have a good sense of accomplishment when finished. Love the 800. Did you use a royal scot as a donor? It certainly looks the part. Well Done
  18. Ok this was already in my workbench but we all knew it was comin.........https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ncbEucjsNFU
  19. Do you think it looks warped? It may have just been the angle the loco was at because Put it against a ruler and it looked straight to it. The photos I take at the mo are not great because my good camera is eh... pushing up daisys so im hoping to get a new one. So the ye olde phone camera has to be used and I am not a photographer. If you want to PM me about the loco it would be good as your expertise could make me a bit better with crankpins and wiring.
  20. One problem then with the dinghams. Crossovers. I plan to have about 3-4 on my layout
  21. Thanks JM, after looking at the dingham coupler it looks pretty good, It looks right:)
  22. Ok thanks. Do you have any pics of some of those couplers?
  23. I want to use a realistic coupling , and have been told that the 3 link is best but I am unsure how to use them.
