@NIRCLASS80 will the 1023 at Moira get me to Portadown tomorrow to see the 1109 ex Portadown departing and see the 0930 ex Dublin arriving?

In theory it should, and according to the timetable definitely, but then again would I bet my life on it,🧐, No!😆

As mentioned in the previous image the 0735 Connolly - Belfast failed at Dundalk. a 29000 unit was used to continue the service but was over 70 mins late so NIR provided 113 and the Gatwick set for the 1030 Belfast - Dublin and 1320 return. 113 is seen arriving into Connolly with the 1030 ex Belfast. Fri 27.04.07

To be honest it's a shame that the Gatwicks only lasted eight years in service (2001 - 2009) Would they have still been in operation if the DVT arrived?

The last operational day of GVS is now planned to be 10th May (was 5th) then trains will continue through directly between city hospital and Adelaide until line closure between LP and Lisburn from July, subject to adjustments for where each service will terminate. Lanyon Place and Botanic likely to see increased numbers of boarding alighting passengers. Then BGCS opens in September. Bus subs will be in place during line closures

Botanic and City Hospital to be closed all July and August now! Goalposts moving all the time it could even be the first weekend in May now! Will keep you guys posted

The DVT - assuming it’s the same one we’re talking about - did arrive, but sat at York Road and never turned a wheel in traffic.

It is now “preserved” at Downpatrick; the only railway vehicle in Ireland to have seen 0% of its (Irish) life in service, and 100% of its operations in preservation as a barrier vehicle!

Yes...

To be honest, The Gatwicks were only in passenger service for seven years, first journey on 10 June 2002 on the 1714 GVS to Newry, to their final journey on the 0750 Portadown to Belfast Central on 18 June 2009.

If only the Gatwicks were used on the now 0800 from Portadown to Lanyon Place, and the 1637 Bangor to Newry, I would have loved a trip on the Gatwicks from Lanyon to Newry, and to get the set leaving on the 1850 x Newry...

@NIRCLASS80 did the Gatwicks ever operate passenger services on the Bangor line?

I was working in Belfast then and commuted in them every day. They were seriously uncomfortable - flat hard seats that would almost make a 26 class railcar seem luxurious, seats too low, windows too high, stuffy in summer and cold in winter.

Very spartan inside.

Less comfortable than British or CIE equivalents…. I actually though the CIE ones were ok.

Lets see... 29000 railcar?

To be honest, the 29000s are great commuter trains, but I am not too sure I would like from Belfast to Dublin... unless they were to send an 8 car set up... that would be good.

A 29 outside a commuter setting is an abomination, saith the lord.

The Gatwicks were similar in comfort terms to a 450 or a 2600.

I sat in a Park Royal Coach No. 1944 in Downpatrick back in August, And I have to say, they are so comfortable.

Unfortunately I have not had the pleasure to travel in 728 yet but I hope to soon.

The DDs are my personal favourite, find the seats comfortable, but I cannot unfortunately say the same for the Irish Rail Mark 2 or Mark 3 (I never travelled in them) have not tried the Mark 4's, 2600s or 2800s yet.

When I got an ICR to Dublin on the 1035 ex Belfast in November 2022, it was interesting, but I got a bit of a sore back from the seats (and there was a queue for the bathroom onboard)!!!

I’m sitting in an ICR as I write this, and my back sympathises!

Unlike many of the good folk here, I don’t actually mind ICRs per se, but the new leather seats are too upright and too hard. As far as any railcars are concerned, probably the best of a very bad lot are NIR’s 4Ks at the moment. I agree about the DDs, by far the best there is operating today, outside Downpatrick!

Nothing like sitting back on a DD speeding through stations.

I’m no expert but that’s not a great record. even with my Mark 4 bias the DDs deffinetly have a better ride and I’ll miss them when there gone. But you can’t overlook a reliability record like that….and that was in 2022, there not getting any younger!

Sorry, This is just information I have that I either was informed of or observed for myself.

During the autumn or winter months there tends to be a period of non stop failures, and that can happen for up to 2 weeks.

I will send an updated version tomorrow.

during leaf fall early morning (and possibly late night idk) Enterprises are subbed by ICRs.

They are also preferred for winter, as if a loco engine decides its not going to cooperate with cold weather its the train out of action. On an ICR (or any DMU railcar) it has a large degree of redundancy so usually isn't an issue, or can at least limp to terminus.
