It's understandable why the people of Malahide would want it to return there, but overall there's no denying that it's a terrible decision.

 

And I really wish Varadkar would cop on and get on with the real work instead of sticking his oar in where it's not needed.

well i suppose we should be thankful it is getting a permenent home. must admitt i would have preferred busaras.....very handy to tip in when the missus is off spending the dosh!

 

Indeed... Busaras also has more space, allowing more capacity and space for expansion. Apparently the layout will have to be shoehorned into its new home!

How do you know this ? or are you guessing ?

 

RTE + Merrion Street News have announced that it is to be put into a purpose built building,so I don't know how you know that the layout will have to shoehorned into a purpose built building when the building is not built.

 

Do you know something that we don't know ? Leo & Co have made a bags of this as well as the country ?

Joe, you left out the "apparently" at the start of that quote, which kinda twists what I said. I'm going on what I heard about the dimensions of the existing Casino building. I wasn't aware that a purpose-built building was being constructed. Regardless, it's still the wrong location...

To the best of my knowledge and don’t quote me, there will again be a purpose built building to house the Fry

The original building on the site, "Casino" will be used as an administrative building with tea rooms etc

There is 1.5 bar to buy the house and build the premises, which has outline planning permission from a previous project for the same site

The site is adjacent to Malahide train Station

Dont know how long it will take to build but dont hold your breath lads.

Thanks for the clarification there, Dave, and for the link. I was basing my assumption on a radio debate I heard a short while back, re. Busaras v Malahide, where the issue with the casino building arose (obviously, the plan for a custom building wasn't revealed at that point). I didn't catch the news today as I had more pressing matters to attend to.

 

Just noticed this at the end of Joe's post:

You're picking an argument right out of thin air there, Joe, because I never said that Varadkar or his party were responsible for making a "bags" of the country. What I was saying, was that there was no need for him to get involved when there was a perfectly good plan already on the table (i.e. Busaras).

 

I have to say I'm slightly bewildered by the antagonistic nature of your post...

Ah, busaras would have actually made it accessible :)

 

How was it not accessible in Malahide castle ???

I live in Malahide and I know that it was at the very most a 10 minute walk from the train station

And in the Irish Times it says 'The vast miniature collection will be placed in a new museum building beside the casino' that will make it even more accessible ,about 1/2 a minute from the train station.

A city centre location would've surely been more accessible and profitable for it rather than having it out in county Dublin. More transport links, tourist accommodation etc.

 

That is understandable but it isn't out in the middle of nowhere it's just 20 minutes on the train

It is if you live outside Dublin, it could be two trains. It would get more visitors if it was in the city centre between additional passing trade and tourists who don't fancy a day trip out of the city centre just to see a model railway. If it were in the city centre they could combine it with other sightseeing.

If people come to see it from outside Dublin it is likely that they are on holiday in Dublin as it is unlikely that anyone would come from up to 300 miles away just for a model railway

It was even less accessible in the castle in the first place tbh, which was half the problem is was getting 25,000 people a year to visit, while a Leprechaun museum in temple bar gets 100,000!

People are less likely to visit specifically because of the model railway, so having it as close as possible to the majority of other attractions in Dublin (i.e. within easy reach of the city centre) makes it more attractive for visitors, as they can work it into their sightseeing schedules with a minimum of fuss. That would be one of the reasons why a feature such as the Leprechaun Museum gets such a higher number of visitors than the Fry did at Malahide Castle.

what do you mean fictional?....there was one of the little feckers on my bed saturday morning!.....of course i was out fridaynight, which might account for that!!!:confused:

The online group dies away and was taken over by spammers, and nothing has been heard from those involved since.

 

Ridiculous. The whole affair is just pitiful.

 

Still, if EVER it gets resurrected, I would prefer to see it in a city centre location. Collins Barracks, Heuston Station, Templebar...wherever.

John Hamill, chairman of the Model Railway Society of Ireland, was one of the figureheads in that group. Perhaps Wrenn, or some other MRSI members here, may be able to provide further info?

i agree with you westy...pityful is not strong enough of a word - f......g ridiculous is the way i would describe it!. the next thing you will hear is that it will be sent somewhere up north.. (like the gods did with C.I.Es 'Meadbh'!) it would be a great loss if we did loose it:(

The Tara's palace doll museum (which co-habited in Malahide with the Fry) seems to be happily set up in Powerscourt House in Enniskerry these last good few months, looks well there too.
