Lockdown wagon works

Hey! Robert, that's enough of the mucky stuff, maybe a few runs/dribbles from the tops of the tanks on the principle of gravity works!

You are really churning them out now helping keep the hobby afloat!

My production has been stymied by a bout of decorating which has made me remember dark days in BF and other places painting by the light of halogens. And how you have to be good at things you detest!  Need a WP!

Well just proving if you wait long enough or look hard enough the web will produce. Link above shows at bi door cement pallet with door and chain attachments in lovely clarity.  Hope this might be of use to folk else where - I thin a small and I mean small split pin drilled into the resin door will give a reasonable looking anchor point.

The MIR barrier wagon kit proved to have a generic ISO container and not the type on the Ammonia trains so I had what I thought would be redundant and built to use up a couple of hours between other jobs - you have to make your own domed ends but  a dapol tank end or a resin / 3D print options out there.  They sat unpainted until a few days ago when a chance viewing of some older footage on Utube I saw a bit of footage of the Foynes- Sligo fuel train and to my eye - a bingo moment so out came the matt black can. Given the coal container cannot be that hard a model ... If Mr Richard  Roache is reading !!  Another use for a 20 foot chassis..

127 as back drop and a Dutch EGV that is in the thinking pot siding/ naught step pending grills  Upside down chassis is a Mk2 EGV  with MTK castings hopefully glued on .

Bells on the way - I guess festive modelling you could say !

The To "spoil  it all" a first pic of some seasonal build goodies from Leslie - 10 spoils to make a Hunslet sized train.

Really sharp resin castings, next to no flash on main body parts. You can see the lead shot let into resin on chassis - it all adds weight. Selection of finer castings to slice out of carrier film and selection of rod and buffer heads chain and 6 pages of A5 instructions  make a comprehensive package.  As they are to run in a rake I will fashion couplings of a simple nature and only have kaydee gear on the ends - well that is the plan anyway.   A quick book search showed the wagons most easily photoed from non door side ! But  one found of the wagon in ballast use so a bit more to do to get my little grey cells around the door locks and operating gear to go along with the instructions.   I guess more to follow..

3D print from Shapeways with Parkside Dundas  underframe, farish wheels and dapol NEM coupler mounts and coupler . added walkways, ladders fillercap and a fanciful representation of the pipework on the deck with brass wire for vac pipes. Transfers and grot required.  The rough nature of the prints could be thought to match overspill but they pass the 2 foot rule if viewer looks the otherway with pint in hand.

Nice work Robert. Are the buildings Far North of Scotland prototypes?

Yes indeed. The work of a small business Pop up designs  and the son of -for the 3D print of Rogart box.  Pop up do a range of tourist items that are slot together lazer cut ply and are based near to Inverness. - well worth a look

https://www.popupdesigns.co.uk/

While not in the super detail lazer cut models these are a fraction of the price and are a fun build and paint well. May well have some crossover for Irish layouts .     The layout they are on is a  simple 4 foot by 2 foot affair - extended test track I suppose but a picture of it at Warley club has attracted offers!

Deffo; worth a look I bought the the locoshed + extension so it holds 4 loco's. it came with & unasked for  the water tower building and a crofters cottage. Very well packed and a  pleasure to deal with . You really have to look at them as the start of a journey and put some work into them. Ben Alder on RM Web has a Far North line thread plus a blog which shows what can be done with them and they are all based on real buildings. I'll post mine when I've started them BUT don't hold your breath!

One bit of good news is that Peters spares have wheels back in stock - 10.5 wagon wheels for SSM bogies  coded PS33 and are lovely items . Also the PS34 coach wheels with lima axle length back in stock and give a super drop in wheel replacement.

Peter emailed on Crimbo eve so orders in straightaway, just before putting sprouts on !  Bang goes the overtime from the Crimbo eve shift worked..12 hour railway shambles at its best !!

Back to larger trucks.   The UTA spoils got a look over and while thinking about drilling the holes I found I was drilling them - seemed zillions but done and then a bit of cutting and glueing and 40 buffers were done. The pics show 6 hours work. lots to do as to this phase bound to be quicker than adding all the bracing and brakes - 80 shoe castings to sort and drill, mount - joy!    A big thank you to Leslie at PW for these little wonders .

Spoils continue but no pics, jumping back a bit to the Beet wagons I was able from MIR get some bits and pieces last week, along with a restock on kadees.  Today as day off between extra shifts has seen a  bit of progress:

966060444_Irishwagonsandrailbus090121004.thumb.jpg.aaf51cb5194912be1a9b17db0a0cf6b0.jpg

Robert Roche created 3D print of the 4 wheel rebody beet wagon.

1399890804_Irishwagonsandrailbus090121002.thumb.jpg.4f0c638ccf3482958753ca0d79e37f59.jpg

Resin 45 foot and a 20 foot container chassis - resin  NQPs from Ian, boiling water to soften and fix twists and bends.  Bogie flat on a pair of Bachmann bogies and kadees fitted. Will need to sort handbrakes and vacc cross shafts as middle is a bit bare, cast buffers and vac pipe from SSM . All in all about 4 hours work over last two days to this stage.

The 20 foot took more work as twist and axle box bearing supports all a mess. I ended up with a 1mm plastic floor having cut out and thinned resin to take MJT W iron frets - this has 3 point suspension so should road hold well. Plasticard mounts and kadee fitted.

Derailment shot ! showing weights, MJTs and coupling mounts. Buffer housings recylced from  the Tank wagons, need to sort heads, brake gear - on both 4 wheelers. But a fun couple of hours. This will get one of the Oil containers shown a while back.

Finally,

Thanks again to Robert Roche, Mayer and SSM on here, plus Kadee and Peters spares for couplings and wheels . The first of 4 beet bogies now done - others on bench to have Kadees added. I think this is the first completed wagon of 2021.

Well a hour spare yesterday allowed cleaning of the bench and then I thought time to fit tail lamps and latest from crail- containers are not glued but held by the black tacky stuff used to retain electrical string on models. - and very good it seems.

Glenderg lamps on IRM - by everso slight opening up bracket to buffer beam the lamp slide on and no need to glue.

C Rail B+I on  IRM flat - ex pw spoils and bogies give a quick brush over with bauxite. In back ground is a Yellow 2mm sherpa casting acting as a chock for a MIR 45footer which is work in progress.

The two water tanks got lamps - ok so naughty having lamps both ends but hopefully loco will disguise most of the time. I did learn having read already ! the handles are very fine - do not use tweezers on the handle.. Another view of the 45 footer, I have added little black dots on the container lug  pocket to suggest the hole therein. What the camera has shown is that I need to add hooks and vac bags to the barriers, SSM  kindly have supplied holes so better fill them.

The Bell is my effort as shown a while back.  So that has used all six  flats off the discounted bulk pack from IRM Crimbo bargains period.  I now have green boxes with yellow spoil containers tucked away - if anybody is after just the yellow boxes...   Back to the spoils , bogie  and 4 wheel Cements, beet prototype, container oil tanks for coal and oil train and bogie tanks - so the barriers can be usedful!  - 20 plus trucks to keep me off the streets - lockdown does have its benefits..

Taken along time to update but work back in the way, well it never went away... A recent leap forward for the western corridor Foynes - Ballina   coal and oil train has been a rake of 10 IFM coal containers on Provincial models 20 chassis.  A simple loop and in coupler between most vehicles and Kaydee 19s on ends.  In the end a box of athern grab rails struck as a good starting point for the dropper  and a small split pin soldered to a plate and screwed to bottom of floor give a reliably produced loop. Aet just ahead of buffers and will push round 15" hornby setrack reverse curves.

A couple of pics with containers - modelled empty upon naked chassis concludes last couple of hours modelling.

All 10 shown for fun. The chassis all currently need the vac cylinder piston and crank drive adding to the cross shaft but if you gloss over it being unfitted  then they are done. Just one with a rock to sort out but others are happily 4 wheels in contact.

The question outstanding does anybody have examples of wagons on a train and any images of the containers, my searches on line, videos and books do well on the locos and wagons take second fiddle.  I guess wagons were in the 27301-27791 series  but open to education..every day is a school day after all.

Yes as far as I remember they used the 27301 series flats for the coal and oil

Just enjoying the smell of railmatch bauxite spray fumes!  as all 10 chassis now in final colour have to let harden before silver on buffer piston, numbers and grime.   Next catch session will be on with the ammonia tanks to try and mug up the vaccumm cylinder support frames and "under gubbins."

piccy time . Showing the frames now painted in jolly CIE bauxite and close ups of the couplings fashioned.

Nex will be to add a touch of silver for the buffer piston and dark grey on buffer faces and coupling hooks.  I can then glue on containers, to give stability/handle when adding numbers etc.

well it keeps be off the streets

Thanks, I thought that allowing vertical movement was required hence the upward crank. I have painted in the pistons and buffer faces  I have also painted the couplings grey to tone down visibility when on ballasted track. Got keen and glued on containers so now its down to numbers and weathering.

As expected I have also found some smaller split pins so these will get used on the UTA skips that now have chains attached. "Just" to bend 20 curved handrails ...

Robert  Glad to see my "flats" put to good use - PLENTY MORE WHERE THEY CAME FROM for those looking for a 20ft container flat!

Even some already in "Europe" - just ask.

Keep up the good work Robert!

Leslie,

I will have to sort it all out but will be after 5 more as basis for the "oil" part of the oil and coal train. The old MIR ammonia tank barriers have a tanktainer suitable, I will have to chat up Ian to see what he has left two have been modeled  as above, plus need two 4 wheel barriers.   https://irishrailwaymodels.com/collections/loads/products/cie-20-container-twin-pack as loads - tucked away somewhere or perhaps your version.    I have asked Steve at Railtec about some 273xx numbers  so might be a source there having used up most of the numbers from the earlier sheets.

In the final train form I should be able to muster 10 coal, 5 oil and to barriers , the real train was quite a bit longer in some photos - but all a universal matt black/ grey... sure it was bauxite at some time, long long ago.

Do you know if IFM is still producing the coal containers. They look very well. Well done.

Worth checking as these were ordered specially as bulk 10.   Thanks for comment, should have been done sooner really but faffing with home spun couplings.

The use of the split pin for coupling stock is a very good idea. Did you use super glue to attach them to the stock? You mentioned getting smaller pins do you think they might be suitable for N gauge models? If so where did you get them?

MikeO

Mike,

These pins came from ebay but the smaller ones came from a garden railway show- a gauge one supplier, Just the ticket supplies. I was "grazing" his little poly bags of wonder and came across them.

I soldered the tails to prevent wire getting jammed and then cut to length the tails were soldered to a small plate and two small self tappers used to a fix these are 1.4mm dia 4mm long - from a Wst midlands tiddly bits supplier - but also on ebay from that well known shop "China."

The hook was going to be the same but in the end I drilled a hole and superglued  it in - a light knik in the end made  enough friction it stayed put in the right plane while the glue did its thing. I have hung a wagon on its end and no pull out so good to go, and apologies to  real engineers for a glue bodge solution. When I use the same method on the UTA spoils I will make a plate.

In N certainly for a fixed rake possible. The current fad is to use magnets in small mounts to be less obtrusive than the Rapido  The back plate with a bit of 1mm cross wire could be made to latch into an NEM pocket easily enough.   I am pretty certain given nothing new in the world that this method is used in 2mmfs coach rakes by the good folk who model scale electric mice..

Robert

Thanks Robert, a very helpful reply.

I picked these up in Halfords this morning. They are 2mm split pins. As usual I was not in specifically to get them but I thought I would look to see if they had any small split pins.  These are the smallest, the largest being 4mm. I will try them on some errant wagons that I have.

I like the idea of magnets but have not come across any that are suitable for N gauge models.

Managed to get some fine chain and started the work on the bi door pallet wagons. I only have 3  so not a big chore but blimey  fiddly fixing chains - drilled for 0.3 wire set into edge of door and this only just fits into links, got a 33 link per inch chain for £10 per meter  No pics as yet as my PC now too old to upload pics on forum after various upgrades, means I will have to save pennies/ buy less IRM products to afford upgrade or save you seeing my ham efforts which might be a blessing.

Well managed to get final chains on balance/ operating wheels and pics uploaded to thread on RM web.  Some filler required where bodies reduced in height  to match the pallet  with plastic sides  and now waiting a cleaning and priming.

I was thinking a pale blue and grot livery with numbers from railtec sheets.  Started looking at tanktainers having got 3 more etches to match the tanks shown up the thread. Hopefully some chassis kits from Leslie in a few weeks.

Thoughts turn to the bogie cement manifolds and making a set of brackets for the Ammonia tanks - sadly no etches available despite a call with SSM - etches on wagon kits not available on their own without hassle.  So plasticard to the rescue.  I guess if l was clever a 3d print would ensure consistent works but not that clever!
