Galteemore Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 (edited) I think so. Lovely as it would be, I suspect that bringing such a beast back to life would be a wasted effort given the paucity of 3’ trackage in Ireland it could actually use - you’d need an Irish equivalent of the Festiniog/Welsh Highland to justify it. In theory, yes, but a locomotive that size would be woefully uneconomic to operate on a line like that. In addition it is only being cosmetically restored: a full return to working order would cost many hundreds of thousands of euros, with possible a complete new boiler involved. 1 Quote

As I understand it, Drumboe's boiler barrel is fine, but smokebox, tubes, tubeplate, inner firebox, stays, foundation ring, etc. will all be wanting replacement. That's after you deal with the bottom half. I reckon it'll be about three million Euro to get it going, allowing for inflation. DRC has always been hampered by not having the land to relay a section of the original line, something they say they will now attempt to address. That will consume many more Euro. 1 Quote

airfixfan Posted July 30, 2020 Author Posted July 30, 2020 Drumboe will not be a cosmetic restoration as Phase 1 as announced will make it a running chassis. Phase 2 after it returns to Donegal Town would be the firebox/boiler and ironically of the 3 Class 5 tanks Drumboe is in the best condition of the 3 survivors. Talks are taking place with the Local Council over parts of the tracked under their control. All donations to bridge a small gap are most welcome. 1 Quote

What's the best way to donate? Edited July 30, 2020 by Wexford70 spelling 1 Quote
airfixfan Posted July 30, 2020 Author Posted July 30, 2020 There is a direct link on the home page of the website for the Donegal Railway Heritage Centre for all donations. The Centre is a registered charity and like all Heritage groups the Centre has suffered from the financial effects of the Covid crisis since March. 2 1 Quote
David Holman Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 What about the Finn Valley Railway? Home territory, track etc in place, albeit needing run round loops, though guess there are other factors, or it would already have been mentioned. 1 Quote

We are looking at a number of options at the Donegal Railway Heritage Centre. Would be great if as you say the track was still there in the Finn Valley but it was all lifted in 1960. Once work starts on Drumboe next month varies options will be examined in more depth. Funds permitting of course! 1 Quote
David Holman Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 Visited Finntown seven years ago and had a ride on the Donegal Railcar, 18 I think, so that bit of the Glenties branch was very much alive. However, a 5mph speed limit did not off much excitement! 1 Quote
airfixfan Posted August 2, 2020 Author Posted August 2, 2020 Just when you mentioned Finn Velley thought you were dealing with the FVR line from Strabane to Stranorlar Finntown Railway were operational on some dates last year but wiill remain closed in 2020. Quote
David Holman Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 Guessed as much! Either way, certainly hope the Donegal project can prosper. Wasn't open when I visited in 2013, but could still tell it was a very good museum and hope to get back one day. Quote
airfixfan Posted August 3, 2020 Author Posted August 3, 2020 You were unlucky when you visited in 2013 as at present during the Summer months we are open to visitors 7 days a week. Quote
Brack Posted August 18, 2020 Posted August 18, 2020 If you needed somewhere to run it in there's a good few miles of track halfway across the irish sea... Quote

Having been involved in what has been one of the most comprehensive rebuilds of any steam loco now in Ireland it most certainly wouldn't cost that but would be a significant amount. Some practical thoughts are that once it leaves Whitehead it to me would seem unlikely to be restored to steaming condition. The lack of a running line also presents a problem. Great work however and I'm sure will look great. Quote
airfixfan Posted August 19, 2020 Author Posted August 19, 2020 Once Drumboe is back in Donegal Town it will boost local support to reopen part of the former railway. When something happens on that front it aids chances of completing the final stage of restoration plans for Drumboe. 1 Quote
airfixfan Posted September 2, 2020 Author Posted September 2, 2020 The Donegal Railway Heritage Centre has a special limited edition badge of Drumboe on sale just now. All funds raised go towards the restoration of Drumboe by the RPSI at Whitehead with work due to start soon. Quote
airfixfan Posted September 5, 2020 Author Posted September 5, 2020 Lots of rolling stock moved today at Donegal Railway Heritage Centre to get ready for the return of Drumboe soon. 2 1 Quote
airfixfan Posted September 26, 2020 Author Posted September 26, 2020 With the imposition of lockdown the Donegal Railway Heritage Centre has been forced to close to the public until October 16th. However the online shop etc will remain open to raise funds towards the restoration of Drumboe and work has now started at RPSI Whitehead. 2 Quote
airfixfan Posted October 24, 2020 Author Posted October 24, 2020 Donegal Railway Heritage Centre has launched an appeal for support on Facebook. The Centre has been closed since late September and all help needed as work has started in Donegal Town for the return of Drumboe early next year Restoration work under way now at RPSI and without any income from visitors help is needed to continue to fund the Drumboe restoration plans. Thanks if you help out. Quote

airfixfan Posted October 25, 2020 Author Posted October 25, 2020 It was a tidy up job in 2007 for public display only. Loco under restoration now at the RPSI base but with Covid impact the Centre put out a soft appeal for support a few days ago to help fund the Drumboe project. 1 Quote
